Most vegetable plants underperform because they are supported the wrong way — or not at all. Here is the correct support for every common backyard vegetable. 🌿

🍅 Tomato — the standard wire cage sold in stores collapses under a mature indeterminate tomato. Use a Florida weave (stakes with twine woven between) or a heavy-duty 5-foot cage minimum.

🥒 Zucchini — the fruit sits on damp soil and rots at the contact point. Place a tile, piece of wood, or straw under each fruit as it develops.

🫑 Pepper — a single bamboo stake and soft tie prevents branches from snapping when loaded with heavy peppers.

🍆 Eggplant — same as pepper. One stake per plant before fruit sets.

🍈 Cantaloupe / Melon — the only way to grow vertically. A fabric sling supporting each melon from a cattle panel arch prevents the vine from snapping under the weight.

🎃 Winter Squash — keep heavy fruit off damp soil on a pallet or straw to prevent base rot.

The mulch piled up against tree trunks in American landscapes — the volcano shape — is one of the most widespread tree-killing practices in residential gardening. And it is visible in most neighbourhoods across the country. 🌳

Here is what it actually does:

Tree bark is designed to be exposed to air. When mulch is piled against the trunk and kept constantly moist, the bark begins to decay. Fungal pathogens enter through the softened bark. Root girdling develops — a root circling the trunk base through the moist mulch layer that physically strangles the tree over 10 to 15 years.

The damage is completely invisible until the tree begins to decline — by which point the vascular system is already compromised.

The correct mulch ring:
✓ Flat donut shape — not a volcano
✓ 2 to 3 inches deep maximum
✓ Extends outward to the drip line
✓ 6-inch gap maintained between mulch and trunk bark
✓ Trunk flare always visible above the soil line
