Architects love thick wood until the HVAC system starts destroying it. We just published a new breakdown on why 1/42" veneer beats out 1/8" solid sawn sheets in commercial environments:

🏢 Aggressive Commercial HVAC: Commercial buildings experience violent, rapid shifts in relative humidity over weekends and standard operating cycles.

💥 The Physics of the Pull: A thick 1/8" sawn plank retains the mass and internal tension of a solid board, allowing it to fight the glue line, split, or delaminate when humidity drops.

✨ Stability in 1/42": At roughly 0.023 inches thick, a standard face veneer has virtually no independent pulling power, letting a stable engineered substrate completely control movement without splitting or popping.

Don't let rigid thickness specs cause costly callbacks on your next commercial project. Check out the full blog post to learn how to spec for long-term stability!

Can you sand wood veneer? Yes, you can! Veneer is just regular natural wood—just a very thin board. 🪵 Whether you prefer using a sanding block with medium-to-high grit paper or a random orbital sander (keeping it flat and steady), it’s totally doable without worrying about sanding through.

Best of all, every sheet from us is pre-sanded and ready to go right out of the box. Check out our collection at www.oakwoodveneer.com!

You don’t need a fancy workbench setup to get a flawless, bubble-free veneer bond. In fact, one of our favorite scraping tools might just be a stray piece of scrap wood lying around your shop! 🪵🔨

In this quick tip, we show how a simple, 16-inch piece of a 2x4—with a slightly radiused edge so it won’t mar your wood—works beautifully to apply maximum pressure from the center out.

Sometimes the best tool for the job is the one you make yourself.

Bidding on commercial millwork without dialing in your material takeoff is an easy way to take a financial bath. We just published a new guide breaking down how to estimate square footage and protect your margins:

🪵 Net vs. Gross Takeoffs: Always account for the balancing sheet factor (doubling your core area for backer sheets to prevent warping) and a 1/2" to 1" trimming margin on all sides.

📈 Species-Specific Waste: Skip the generic waste factors. Standard domestic running matches sit safely around 15% to 20% waste, but exotics jump to 30% to 40%, and burls demand 40% to 50% due to natural voids and defects.

📐 Tracking Sequence Drops: When sequence matching, a leftover 1-foot drop from a 10-foot sheet can't just be spliced into the middle of a wall, meaning un-sequenced drops must be factored in as material waste.

Stop guessing your yield on big commercial bids. Check out the full guide on the blog to protect your bottom line!

Wood veneer isn't just for wood! 🌟 You can apply it to a variety of flat, smooth surfaces like plastic, glass, stone, and man-made wood.

The secret to a strong bond lies in choosing the right backer for your project. Wood backing runs the grain in the opposite direction, acting like miniature plywood for added stability—perfect when using contact cement. On the other hand, phenolic backing provides a rigid, high-strength layer while still being flexible enough for demanding surfaces.

Boardroom specs causing headaches?

🧱 If you're bidding on high-end commercial projects, mixing up Sequence Matching and Blueprint Matching can completely blow your margins and land you with a pile of rejected panels.

We just dropped a brand-new guide breaking down the differences between these two methods, what they mean for your waste factor, and how to protect your workflow in the press room:

📏Sequence Matching: The bread and butter of architectural woodwork where consecutive sheets keep a continuous, running match with a predictable 15% to 20% waste factor.

📐Blueprint Matching: The zero-tolerance masterpiece where every sheet is custom-clipped to an exact architectural coordinate, often driving waste up to 40% or 50%.

Before you submit your next commercial submittal or bid on a luxury hotel lobby, check out the full breakdown on the blog!

While a vacuum press or a hot or cold press utilizing white or yellow PVA glue is the preferred professional method for applying backed wood veneer, contact cement remains a highly accessible option for standard shop applications. Regardless of your adhesive choice, avoiding wood movement and structural cracks comes down to proper acclimation. Because veneer sheets arrive tightly rolled in shipping boxes, always unroll them, lay them completely flat with a board on top, and let them rest in your shop's environment for at least forty-eight hours before installation. This simple protocol prevents rapid moisture contractions or expansions from compromising your finished panels.

How long do you typically let your veneer sheets acclimate before pressing? Let us know below!
