šæ WHAT IS IT WEDNESDAY? šæ
What looks like it belongs in a tropical rainforestābut grows wild right here in Missouri and Arkansas?
Meet the purple passionflower (Passiflora incarnata), also known as maypop!
I photographed this one while visiting Arkansas, but I spotted the same incredible native vine growing on our property here in Missouri last yearāand didnāt get a picture before it disappeared.
Purple passionflower is a perennial vine that climbs surrounding plants using tightly coiled tendrils. Its unusual purple-and-white blooms eventually produce green, egg-shaped fruits called maypops. Once fully ripe, the soft, fragrant pulp inside is edible.
Itās more than just a beautiful wildflower:
šæ Native to Missouri and Arkansas
š Climbs using curling tendrils
š¦ Serves as a host plant for several butterfly species
š Produces edible fruit when fully ripe
š± Returns from its roots each year
The name āmaypopā is commonly attributed to the hollow fruits making a popping sound when stepped on.
Have you ever spotted one growing wildāor tasted a ripe maypop?
