Late summer is a great time to prep sites for seeding native seeds in late fall, or planting native perennials later in the fall or next year, once temperatures have warmed enough. ☀️ Cardboard covered with yards of soil is an easy way to smother grass and weeds. It avoids using toxic chemicals to kill the vegetation, keeps the topsoil intact and the soil microbiome alive, and biodegrades over a few months time so you can plant right through it. 🌱

These eco-conscious homeowners will get to enjoy a gorgeous pocket meadow of native wildflowers and grasses next year and for years to come. I’ll come back in November to sow the native seeds so they can stratify over winter and germinate next spring and early summer. Can’t wait to see this little meadow in bloom next year! 🌼

Keep your eyes peeled for these beauties as you walk the woods during the summer. Monotropa uniflora, also known as the American Indian Ghost Pipe, is a herbaceous, parasitic, non-photosynthesizing, perennial flowering plant native to North America. It emerges from the ground in summer when the conditions are exactly right: adequate soil moisture and symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi & tree root activity. These gems are a sign of healthy ecosystem. 🌱🍄‍🟫🌲

Keep an eye out for our smallest garden friends; they’re often low to or on the ground. This very hungry baby monarch was inches away from my feet and could have easily been squashed if I hadn’t been paying attention. 🐛

Last Sunday, I had the pleasure of working in this space, a riparian ecosystem I’ve been fostering back to life over the past 10 months. To see all these native perennials from Artemis Growers thriving and in bloom totally made my summer! ☀️🌱🌸
