My wife is a realtor. Which means she hears the same question approximately fourteen times a week from clients, colleagues, and random people at closing tables across Upstate South Carolina."

Do you know a good handyman?

She used to find this question stressful. Because the honest answer for most realtors is some version of maybe, let me think, I have a few people but I am not completely sure about all of them.

A bad contractor referral is not just an inconvenience in real estate. It can blow up a deal. A no-show inspection. A job half done when the closing date is three days away. A repair that was supposed to happen and didn't, discovered at the worst possible moment.

Realtors guard the good names like classified information.

My wife does not have that problem anymore.

Now when someone asks her, she just sends them my number. No hesitation. No qualifiers. No I think he is pretty good, let me know how it goes.

Just my name and the website.

Because she knows exactly what is going to happen.

I am going to answer the phone. I am going to give an honest quote. I am going to show up when I said I would. I am going to do the work right and charge what I quoted and communicate throughout and clean up before I leave.

She knows this because she is married to me and has watched me operate for long enough to trust it completely.

I genuinely love building things. Decks, bathrooms, tile work, punch lists, new construction projects. I find the actual work deeply satisfying in a way that I feel lucky about.

The hard part is the schedule.

Not in a complaining way. I am grateful every single day that people trust me with their homes and their projects and their money. That is not something I take lightly.

But here is the truth about running Nate's Handyman Business in Upstate South Carolina right now.

There are more people who need help than there are hours in my day to help them. And I care about every single one of them.

So when the schedule gets full and someone waits longer than I want them to, that genuinely bothers me. I think about it. I lose a little sleep over it sometimes.

I am working on the systems. Getting better at planning. Getting better at managing a schedule that has gotten bigger than I originally anticipated when I started this thing.

But I would rather be honest about the fact that I am a real person running a real business and sometimes it is a lot, than pretend I have it all perfectly dialed in.

People find out I am a ministry resident at our church AND a handyman and they get this look on their face.

Like they are waiting for the punchline.

Because it is admittedly a little bit of an unusual combination. Most people pick a lane.

But here is the thing. I am not sure I ever really thought of them as separate lanes.

I got into ministry because I care about people. I care about showing up for them in the hard moments and the everyday moments. I care about doing right by the person in front of me even when it costs me something.

And then I got into the handyman business and realized I was doing the exact same thing with different tools.

Showing up when I say I will. Not inflating a bill because I can get away with it. Caring about the outcome for the homeowner more than the speed of my own schedule. Treating someone's home like it belongs to someone who matters.

Because it does.

I run Nate's Handyman Business across Upstate South Carolina with the same approach I bring to everything else in my life.

The two jobs feel different on the surface.

At the core they are the same job.

Serve people well. Do it honestly. Show up.

When people find out I am a ministry resident AND a handyman they get this look on their face.

Like they are trying to figure out which one is the real job and which one is the thing I do on the side.

Honestly both are my real job depending on the day.

Some days I am in someone's bathroom doing tile work thinking about Sunday's message.

Some days I am mid-sermon thinking about a deck I need to finish on Monday.

My wife is a realtor on top of all of this and I think she has just accepted that our life is a little bit unusual.

The thing is though, I genuinely love both.

Building something with your hands that is going to last. And being part of something that helps people.

Turns out those are not that different.

I had a customer stop me mid-job last year and ask if the price was going to change now that I was already into it.

She asked it carefully. Like she had rehearsed the question a little. Like she was bracing for the answer.

And I stood there for a second because I understood immediately why she was asking.

She had been burned before. Probably more than once. The contractor who gets in the door and suddenly remembers a whole list of things he forgot to mention in the quote. The invoice at the end that looks nothing like the number that started the conversation.

It is so common that she felt she needed to ask me directly, mid-project, whether I was going to do it to her.

That bothered me. Not because she asked. She had every right to ask. It bothered me because the fact that she felt she needed to ask says everything about what this industry has done to homeowners in Upstate South Carolina.

The answer was no.

The price was not going to change.

The quote we agreed on is what she paid. That is how I run Nate's Handyman Business and it is how I am going to keep running it.

Sometimes I underestimate a job. It happens. Materials run higher than I expected or the job takes longer than I planned. When that happens I eat the difference. That is my mistake to carry, not hers.

I am not telling you this to sound like a hero. I am telling you this because I think it should just be the standard and I am a little bit frustrated that it is not.

"Nobody has ever regretted building a deck. This is a statistical fact that Nate's Handyman Business is prepared to stand behind unconditionally."

What people DO sometimes regret is the six to eight months of conversation that happened before the deck got built.

It usually goes like this.

One spouse wants the deck. Has wanted the deck for approximately two years. Has a Pinterest board for the deck. Has opinions about the deck railing that are surprisingly specific for someone who has never built anything.

The other spouse is not opposed to the deck, exactly. They just have questions. Reasonable questions. What is this going to cost. Where exactly is it going. Are we sure we need that size. What about the other thing we said we were saving for.

And so begins the negotiation.

It is not a bad negotiation. It is actually a pretty healthy one, as home improvement negotiations go. But it takes time. And energy. And at least two separate conversations that technically started about something else entirely.

Then Nate comes out and looks at the space.

He asks the right questions. He gives a straight answer about what it will cost and how long it will take. He does not add mystery charges halfway through or finish the job at a number that looks nothing like the quote.

And then he builds the deck.

And the couple stands in their backyard looking at it and both of them, the one who wanted it and the one who had questions, feel exactly the same thing at exactly the same time.

Worth it.

I have two jobs.

One of them is the handyman stuff. Decks, bathrooms, tile, punch lists, all of it across Upstate South Carolina.

The other one I am basically an unlabeled assistant pastor at our church. Ministry resident is the official title.

People ask me sometimes how those two things go together.

Honestly I think they go together better than you would expect.

Showing up when you say you will. Doing what you promised. Caring about the person in front of you more than the transaction. Not inflating a bill because you can get away with it.

That is just how I try to live. The church stuff and the handyman stuff are not that different when you get down to it.

Sometimes I have so much work going on that keeping track of everything is genuinely a Sometimes I have so much work going on that keeping track of everything is genuinely a real challenge.

Which I know sounds like a weird thing to admit.

But here is the thing. Every single one of those jobs has a real person behind it who trusted me with their home and their money and their time. And that matters to me more than the schedule does.

So yes I am busy. And yes sometimes I have to really work to make sure nobody falls through the cracks.

But I would rather be the guy who cares too much about getting it right than the guy who just moves fast and moves on.

Something happened on a job recently that I keep thinking about.

A customer stopped me mid-work and asked if the price was going to change now that I was already into it.

And I realized why they were asking.

Because apparently that happens a lot. Contractor gets in the door, sees the scope, suddenly remembers a bunch of stuff he forgot to mention in the quote.

I do not do that.

What I quoted is what you pay. I have eaten the difference more than once when I underestimated materials or time. That is on me not you.

I would rather take the hit than have a customer feel like they got played.
