Solidago — our native goldenrod — shines as one of the most steadfast companions of the landscape. The grass-leaf goldenrod that fills our fields is more than a flash of late-summer gold; it’s an indicator of thriving, mineral-rich soil and an anchor for pollinators and overwintering wildlife alike.

Through every season it tells a story — the bright bloom of August, the textured seedheads of fall, the pale architecture of winter. Its scent is spicy and warm, like cayenne honey on a cool breeze.

To me, goldenrod is a reminder that beauty doesn’t end with the bloom. It transforms, endures, and quietly nourishes life long after the color fades, it is medicine in every way.🌿💛

✨ My first internship in college at 20 years old was partially in restoration ecology—and I loved every second of it. It taught me to listen and observe the land, letting it show what it needs. The native seed bank lies quietly in wait, ready to flourish when the right conditions return. I cleared a few invasive honeysuckle bushes a few months back down the bank and the earth surprised me with two native asters and a native fern species that happily moved into the newly created space.

It’s like watching a slow, beautiful painting come to life—each brush stroke subtle, steady, intentional. Restoration is patience. It’s trust. And it’s a reminder that slow and steady truly does win the race. 🌱💧

My old farmhouse in NC exchanges caretakers today. I sit in our new home in upstate NY, the morning air filled with the gentle pitter of rain drops and bird song, thinking about the last climb I did at the farm. What a beautiful day. Thank you Quercus alba for your outstretched limbs, furrowed bark and glitter of fall leaves to greet me. You will be missed ❤️🌳

One of the greatest pleasures of being a tree nerd is hearing folks openly share about a tree that is meaningful to them. I think it’s such an innately human memory to unlock and can be shared by all. Friday I had a young woman light up when I explained I was an arborist. ‘There is a huggeeee oak in my neighborhood that I adore. Her name is Big Bertha, she gives us so much shade’. Everyone probably has a tree from their childhood that has meaning. Mine were the first Kentucky coffee tree I saw w my Oma on a walk to her neighborhood park. The spruce that outgrew my growth spurt at 8 and made me ponder why it was different than I. A directionally pruned white oak that shaded the road to my childhood home and the first crabapple I climbed. Her sweet scented flowers and the buzz of the the bees was such a safe haven.

rec climb at Daffin Park, first time for me climbing a live oak and a limb walk outside of the . Captured a convo amongst friends in the canopy as well as a passerby. Shout out to for her patience and amazing teaching and hype abilities as I continue to gain trust in myself and my gear in the trees 🌳 ❤️
