🔥 Heating & Cooling ❄️

Fall is here, have you started preparing your home? We want to provide you with the knowledge on how to make your home stay warm the whole season, and maybe save a little on the way. Here’s how!

-Service The Furnace: change the filters and contact a professional for a tune-up to make sure your heater works safely before use.
-Chimneys: have them cleaned and inspected for creosote buildup before lighting the first use.
-Ceiling Fans: Don’t forget to revers that air flow! For colder months we will want these set to spin counter clockwise on low speed to push warm air back down into the living space.
-Space Heaters: Always plug your heater directly into a wall outlet (NOT EXTENSIONS) and try not to share that outlet with other items. Keep at least 3 ft from ANYTHING flammable, including bedding, rugs, drapes, etc. Keep heaters out of high traffic walkways like door frames and tight halls to prevent personal injuries. Inspect cords for any frays or cracks before use.
-Smoke Detectors & Carbon Monoxide- these devices should be checked monthly, but are especially important when we are using gas heating, space heaters, and maybe sometimes overloading the system with holiday lights.

🔥 Attic Insulation ❄️

Colder air is coming, do you know if your home is ready? We want to provide you with the knowledge on how to check your insulation now and in the future so something like this doesn’t go unnoticed.

SAFETY FIRST!
1. Put on safety gear, including a mask, gloves, and eye protection.
2. Watch out for exposed wiring or nails.
3. Step only on wooden floor joists or supported cat walks; never walk directly on the drywall ceiling, or you may fall.
HOW TO CHECK
1. Use a tape measure or ruler to push down into the insulation until you hit the attic floor. Go slow, but use pressure.
2. Check if the insulation depth is even across the space and around the outer edges.
3. Look at the floor framing: if your insulation sits below or level with the wood joists, you do not have enough insulation.
4. Recommended regional standards generally call for 10 to 14 inches or more. You can find out your exact climate zone by visiting https://planthardiness.ars.usda.gov
DID YOU NOTICE ANY…?
1. Dark, dirty spots on the insulation? That means air is leaking through the house.
2. Signs of moisture, mold, water stains, or pests.
3. Are all roof vents and soffit vents open and not blocked by thick insulation? This can cause heat and humidity to stay trapped, providing the perfect environment for mold and mildew as well as pests.

🏡 Fall Window Preparation 🌧️

As we inch closer and closer to the crisp fall air, being prepared is number 1. Check around all windows and make sure they are clean, caulked properly, and surrounding insulation is in good condition. For homes with storm windows make sure to remove your screens and swap to keep that cozy feeling going. Don’t forget to clean your screens at the end of the season with a garden hose and soapy water solution. Dry well and store for the season! That’s all folks, and you’re ready to go!

If your exterior door is sticking or hard to close, don’t force it. It could be an early sign of foundation movement, humidity issues, or a failing door frame. Checking it sooner can prevent further foundation damage, prevent loss/waste of heat/AC, and keep your home secure.
