Your shrubs and hedges have been growing all spring. By mid-July, it shows.

Overgrown beds, branches blocking walkways, hedges that have lost their shape. It doesn't just look messy. It can actually stress the plants if the wrong things get cut at the wrong time.

Summer pruning matters, but what you prune and how you prune it matters more. Cut the wrong shrub in July, and you remove the buds it needs to bloom this fall. Prune too aggressively in peak heat, and the plant burns energy recovering when it should be surviving.

Our landscape crew knows what to trim, what to shape, and what to leave alone until fall. We handle the cleanup too.

These are bagworms. And if you have evergreens on your property, you need to check them today.

Bagworms are actively feeding across Kansas right now. They attach themselves to junipers, arborvitae, cedars, and other evergreens, build small camouflaged bags out of silk and plant material, and chew through the foliage from the inside out.

Here's what most homeowners don't know until it's too late:

🌲 Evergreens don't regrow lost needles. The damage is permanent.
🌲 A severe infestation can kill the entire plant.
🌲 Each female lays up to 500 eggs inside her bag. One bad year sets up years of recurring problems.
🌲 By mid-August, the larvae seal themselves inside and stop feeding. Chemical treatment stops working.

Right now, while the larvae are small and actively feeding, is the window. Once it closes, it's closed until next spring.

Walk outside and look at your evergreens. If you see small spindle-shaped bags hanging from the branches, call us. If you're not sure what to look for, we can inspect them for you.

Your mower deck is one of the best w**d control tools you own. Most people just don't set it high enough.

In July and August, Kansas lawns should be mowed at 3.5 to 4 inches. Here's what that extra height actually does for your lawn:

🌱 Shades the soil so crabgrass and other w**d seeds can't get the sunlight they need to germinate

You're probably watering your lawn more often than you need to and not giving it enough when you do.

Most Kansas lawns need about 1 inch of water per week in summer. The trick is delivering it in fewer, deeper sessions instead of a little bit every day. Shallow watering trains shallow roots, and shallow roots can't handle July and August heat.

A few quick rules:
💧 Water before 8 AM. Evening watering feeds fungus.
💧 About 1 inch per week.
💧 2-3 deep sessions per week beats daily light watering every time.
