A slab poured in fall faces its hardest winter first, before it has reached full strength, so how you treat it that first season matters. Keep de-icing salt off it entirely and use sand for traction instead, because chloride de-icers accelerate the surface freeze and thaw that causes scaling. Shovel with a plastic blade rather than a steel edge. Keep your downspouts and grading pushing water away from the edges so meltwater is not pooling and refreezing against fresh concrete. And know when to wait: stamped or decorative finishes, heavy excavation in frozen ground, and large open flatwork with no way to cover the pour usually read better on a spring calendar. A proper cold weather pour is not a summer pour done quickly. It is a different recipe and a different plan. The mix gets adjusted: accelerating admixtures to shorten set time, a richer cement content to generate more hydration heat, a lower water ratio so there is less free water to freeze, and air entrainment that builds in the microscopic voids a Western New York slab needs to survive decades of freeze and thaw. Then there is the ground. Concrete should never be placed on frozen subgrade, because it thaws unevenly under the new slab and cracks it from below no matter how good the mix was. After finishing, insulated blankets or a heated enclosure hold the slab above about 50 degrees for the first three to seven days, and the heat comes off gradually so the surface does not shock.
