This is one question I am frequently asked.

Most people assume another bee just picks up the role.

But not just any bee becomes a queen.

One of the most remarkable things about a honey bee colony is that it doesn't rely on just one bee.

If the queen suddenly disappears, the colony immediately goes into emergency mode.

Worker bees begin searching for the youngest larvae possible, ideally less than three days old, because younger larvae have the greatest potential to develop into a high-quality queen.

Those ordinary worker larvae are about to get an extraordinary opportunity.

The worker bees begin to build a large, peanut-shaped queen cell around the tiny larva.
That larva is fed nothing but royal jelly for its entire development.
Because of that special diet, the larva's body develops completely differently.
About 16 days after the egg was laid, a brand-new virgin queen emerges.

The queen wasn't born special.

She started life exactly the same as every other female worker bee.

The difference wasn't genetics.

It was nutrition.

Every honey bee larva receives royal jelly during its first few days of life.

Worker larvae are then switched to a different diet, while future queens continue receiving royal jelly throughout their entire larval development.

That continuous diet changes how her body develops, resulting in fully developed ovaries, a much larger body, and a lifespan measured in years instead of weeks.

The bees don't choose an adult worker to become queen. Instead, they choose a very young female larva and raise her into a queen by feeding her nothing but nutrient-rich royal jelly throughout her entire larval development.

Nature never stops reminding us how powerful the right care at the right time can be.

Sometimes greatness isn't something you're born with.

Sometimes it's something that's developed through opportunity, encouragement, and the people around you.

Honey bees remind us that potential often exists long before anyone notices it.

The right care and the right investment, at the right time, can completely change a life

Before today, did you know every queen you've ever seen started life with the exact same genetic blueprint as an ordinary worker bee?

The difference wasn't her DNA.

It was how the colony raised her.

What's one thing you've learned from bees that applies to everyday life?

Save this post so you can share it with someone who thinks a queen bee is simply "born a queen."

Are we right?? Great day to pop the tops and make sure your girls have enough food till Spring gets here! We hope everyone had minimal losses over the winter - but winter isn't over yet - the critical time is starting soon as they start brooding up and will need more food to keep that at 95*.

THE MEETING WILL BE HELD ONLINE DUE TO WEATHER RELATED BUILDING CLOSURE.

Club members can access the zoom link through their newsletter.

This month's meeting will be Tuesday, January 20th at 7pm at Wildwood Environmental Academy with speaker Emily Mueller. Emily is a dedicated beekeeper, educator, and founder of Mueller Honey Bee in Akron, Ohio, committed to honey bee preservation and public education. She is an active local member of beekeeping associations and a traveling public speaker, focusing on community outreach through educational presentations and beekeeping instruction for both children and adults.

Emily's presentation will be on Medicinal Beekeeping (Bee Products That Heal Us and How to Make Them) - This presentation explores the hive as a source of powerful natural remedies, focusing on the healing properties of bee products used in apitherapy. Participants will learn the medicinal value of hive products, including honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly, beeswax, and bee venom, as well as gain an understanding of their therapeutic uses, basic methods of preparation, and essential safety considerations related to their use.
