Wyoming DEQ recognizes Asbestos Awareness Week

The Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) will be recognizing Asbestos Awareness from April 1-7, 2022 to help the public better understand what asbestos is, where it comes from, what building materials might contain it and how to dispose of it.

Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous silicate mineral that was mined all over the world. It is very strong, doesn’t transfer heat and absorbs sound. Asbestos was put into many building materials, and it doesn’t go away over time, except with good removal practices. Asbestos has been known to cause several types of cancer and damage to lungs when fibers are breathed in from the air or swallowed.

According to Linda Dewitt, DEQ Asbestos Program Coordinator, it's critical for the public to know how to spot, handle and dispose of asbestos.

"It's really important that the public know what to do with asbestos, especially when it is in their private residence," Dewitt said. "Many people just don't realize that their homes may have several building materials that contain asbestos."

Dewitt added that during the next seven days, DEQ will be providing various information, reading materials, and "How To's" through social media and the agency's website to assist the public.

Each year, the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization dedicates April 1-7 to increasing awareness of the dangers of asbestos and preventing exposure to the known carcinogen.

Asbestos causes various fatal diseases and there is no safe level of exposure. Throughout the 20th century, the mineral was widely used in construction, shipbuilding, and the automotive industry. Without a ban, asbestos currently remains legal and lethal in nearly 70% of the world, including in the United States. As such, it continues to kill more than 200,000 people globally each year, yet these deaths are entirely preventable.

Before disturbing any materials in your building or residence, have it tested. If materials come back with any % asbestos, contact a certified general abatement contractor, such as Risk Removal, for a quote on abatement.

The removal of flooring can be a complex process that may disturb hazardous material that can contaminate the entire site. Many homes and commercial buildings erected prior to 1978 may have asbestos-containing floor tile, sheet vinyl, or mastic. These types of floors should be removed by professionals who are trained and certified to handle and dispose of such material. Risk Removal will assess the site and identify any hazards, including asbestos floor tiles or sheet vinyl, that might be present. Our experts are trained and certified in the safe abatement of both asbestos-containing and non-asbestos containing flooring products.

For much of the United States, it is getting cold enough to freeze pipes. If this happens in your property, make sure you get drywall system components tested for asbestos before flood cuts are done and further restoration happens. The drywall system components often contain asbestos, depending on when it was manufactured and where it was manufactured. If any components come back asbestos containing, contact a certified abatement contractor for a quote on safe and proper removal and disposal.
