Mountain Barndominm update

From late September we shared pics of the grading and foundation work. Since that time we have been erecting the red iron frame. While the system is bolt together, there are a lot of parts that have to be fit together in the proper order. Since this is a custom build, window & door frames must be custom build and trimmed out on site.
Building in the mountains during the winter also has it’s challenges. Some days it is simply too dangerous to work because of wind or ice. After the frame is complete, with doors and windows trimmed out, we are onto the next step of setting wall panels. Very few of these panels can be set whole, but must be cut and fitted around the doors and windows. We are now ready to install the roof panels and then the project will almost be dried in.

This is a phase 1 design for a garage and studio. Phase 2 will include the main house. This design includes a pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) combined with a wood framed studio. The PEMB is designed to be tall enough to accommodate an upper storage loft. The wood frame studio allows for the metal panels to be run horizontal. The home will sit in a forested area and will have exterior metal panels both roof and siding. The color combination will be black on black, black siding and black roofing.

There is more to erecting a pre- engineered metal building than just bolting it together. This project began with cutting 4 feet of grade. We over-excavated the site to an additional depth of 3 feet and removed large rock. After that we replaced the soil and compacted in lifts of 4-6" with a large ride on roller.

Then the plumbing was set and then we excavated the footings. Notice that some of the footings are 6 feet x 6 feet x 30" deep!

Once the footings were dug we began forming and fine leveling. The pad site was once again compacted after fine grading. The next step was to place insulation for under floor heating and bend all our rebar. We are almost ready to pour this slab!
