Redoing a shower? Picking the wall material is one of the first decisions you'll make. Here's a plain look at the three we're asked about most. 🚿

• Tile: best if you want a custom look and don't mind keeping up with grout.
• Acrylic panels: best for a quick, budget-friendly update.
• Solid surface: best for low upkeep with a more solid, high-end feel.

One honest note: no-grout walls are lower maintenance, not no maintenance. The silicone seams still need a check now and then.

As the weather cools and windows stay closed, bathroom moisture tends to hang around longer. Steam from a hot shower has fewer places to go, and colder surfaces like exterior walls and windows make condensation more noticeable.

A few signs your bathroom isn't clearing moisture well are a mirror that stays fogged long after you're done, paint that's peeling or bubbling near the ceiling, mildew that keeps coming back in the grout or corners, and a musty smell. A quick check is to hold a single square of tissue up to the fan grille while it's running. If the fan is pulling air, the tissue should be drawn toward it.

It also helps to keep the fan running for a while after your shower, not just during it. And if you're remodeling a bathroom, it's the right time to look at the fan itself, including whether it suits the size of the room and whether it vents to the outdoors rather than into the attic, where that damp air can cause problems of its own.

A custom home office we finished for a Frederick County homeowner — floating wood desk, matching shelves, and warm under-shelf lighting so the whole workspace feels calm and put-together. What a difference!

This kitchen was definitely ready for an update, but one thing we really wanted to be careful about was keeping the character of the rest of the home.

There’s a lot of beautiful natural wood throughout the house, along with the exposed beams and hardwood floors, so we wanted the new kitchen to feel like it belonged there—not like a completely different style was dropped into the middle of the home.

We kept that warmth with the new wood cabinetry and then lightened everything up with new countertops, backsplash and updated finishes. We’re really happy with how it all came together.
