They already had a pool and spa—but much of this Newbury Park backyard was barely being used.

The homeowners wanted something more than a collection of outdoor features. They wanted a place where their large extended family could gather for dinner, spend weekends together, watch college football, and simply enjoy being outside.

We reimagined the space around the way they actually wanted to live—adding a covered cabana with an outdoor kitchen and dining area, a fireplace and TV, a second pergola closer to the home, new landscaping, lighting, and pathways that connected it all.

One of our favorite parts of the design? Positioning the new cabana so the homeowners could keep their beautiful mountain views from inside the house.

The Backyard Where Everyone Wants to Gather

When we first visited this home, the backyard had everything it needed... except a place where the family truly wanted to spend time together.

The outdoor kitchen was outdated, the fireplace had been damaged after a nearby wildfire, and the space no longer reflected the way they wanted to live.

Their dream wasn't simply to renovate a backyard.

They wanted a place where their children's friends would always want to come over. A place for family dinners, celebrations, and evenings spent around the fire.

So we reimagined the space from the ground up—transforming the outdoor kitchen, refreshing the fireplace, updating the patio, and creating an outdoor living area designed for everyday life.

Today, it's exactly what they imagined.

Why We Started Cat in a Hammock

Eight years ago, we started Cat in a Hammock because we believed creating your dream backyard shouldn't feel overwhelming.

Too often, we saw homeowners excited about the possibilities, only to find themselves stressed by decisions, uncertainty, and the remodeling process itself.

We believed there had to be a better way.

So we built a company centered around thoughtful design, clear communication, quality craftsmanship, and a commitment to making the experience just as enjoyable as the finished space.

Because we're not just creating beautiful outdoor spaces.

We're creating the place where birthdays are celebrated, families reconnect, children grow up, and memories are made for years to come.

There’s a certain rhythm to life in the Conejo Valley—warm afternoons, long evenings, and an easy pull to be outside.

Over the years, we’ve found that the most meaningful outdoor spaces aren’t the ones with the most features… they’re the ones that feel like they’ve always belonged to the home—and to the people living there.

Our Creative Director, Kristina Jones, recently put some of these reflections into words for . It’s a bit more personal than what we usually share—less about projects, more about what we’ve learned designing and building these spaces over time.

This hillside backyard had a beautiful view — but it wasn’t yet a place to live in.

Today, it’s the home everyone looks forward to visiting.

The grandparents tell us it’s become the gathering place. The children and grandchildren spend hours outside — playing, swimming, lingering by the fire as the sun fades over the horizon.

What changed wasn’t only the layout or the materials.
What changed was how the space feels.

It invites people to stay longer.
To reconnect.
To build traditions.
