The guys at Foundation Solutions saved this client’s yard from collapsing onto the beach. Combining carbon fiber reinforcement with tiebacks provided an effective alternative to tearing out and completely replacing the retaining wall. Great example of using the right repair systems together to solve a serious structural problem.

Most foundation repair contractors are taught how to install carbon fiber. Few have the opportunity to learn how engineers design with it.

Understanding concepts like bond, load transfer, development length, and fiber orientation can help you tackle a wider range of foundation and structural repairs with greater confidence.

That's why we put together this article, to break down the engineering principles behind carbon fiber structural repair in a practical, easy-to-understand way.

The strongest bowed wall repairs don’t start with a bracket. They start with engineering.

One of the biggest misconceptions in the foundation repair industry is that every carbon fiber bowed wall system requires mechanical anchors.

The BowGuard system achieves its 39,546 lb design strength (per 6-inch strap) through the bonded SRS-600UNI / SRS-1000 composite, verified through independent third-party testing. That doesn’t mean the wall itself may not require additional restraint.

That’s why BowGuard offers the Simpson Strong-Tie® URFP bracket as an option when the connection between the house framing and foundation wall is uncertain. It provides additional restraint when appropriate—but it is not what gives the BowGuard system its design strength.

The wall dictates the solution. Engineering determines what that solution should be.

Do carbon fiber bowed wall straps all need anchors?

That's a question every foundation repair contractor should be asking.

For decades, the industry has been conditioned to associate carbon fiber bowed wall repairs with brackets, anchors, and mechanical connections. But where did that assumption come from—and does it apply to every system?

In our latest article, we explore the engineering behind:

✔ Bond strength
✔ Development length
✔ Why some systems use anchors
✔ When anchorage may be appropriate
✔ Why engineering—not hardware—should drive the design

We also examine how early steel beam systems and pre-cured carbon fiber technologies shaped the industry's thinking, and why modern structural strengthening systems are designed using the same engineering principles trusted in bridges, parking garages, retaining walls, and other demanding infrastructure applications.

If you repair bowed foundation walls, this is a must-read.

For decades, contractors have been told carbon fiber bowed wall straps require anchors. But where did that belief come from—and does engineering actually support it?
