Walk a Denver backyard twice, same path, and it tells you what changed.

First walk: a picnic table sitting on dirt, a slope you climbed sideways, a fence line that stopped at bare ground. Second walk, same path: timber steps up the grade, a gravel pad the table sits level on, a curbed strip of sod, evergreens in rock rings, and a rock bed carrying water away from the house.

Nothing in the after is decoration. Every piece answers something that was wrong on the first walk, which is the only reason to build any of it.

Before you buy one more plant for that Denver flower bed, size the rows.

Here's the proportion I work from on a layered flower bed: the back row sits around chest height and stays green in February, the middle row lands about half that, and the front row stays under your knee. Get those three heights right and the bed has depth from the sidewalk, even in winter when the color is gone. Get them wrong and no plant on earth fixes it, because what you've built is a wall and a stripe.

One more thing the video didn't have room for: pick the middle row first. It's the row people skip, and it's the one that decides whether the bed reads as a design or a lineup.

Most backyard landscaping fails underground, years before you can see it.

When a patio heaves or a lawn turns into a swamp two springs later, the problem was decided on the day of the landscape installation: a base that never got compacted, a grade that sends water at the house instead of away from it, edges with nothing holding them. That's the work you never see in the after photo, and it's the reason we've rebuilt so many other people's installs across the Denver metro.

Prep and drainage aren't upgrades you add to a landscaping quote. They're the job. Everything you actually enjoy, the patio, the lawn the kids play on, the bed that still looks right in year five, sits on top of them.

Every after in this Denver side yard started as a decision about dirt.

A dirt strip along a fence stays dirt for a reason: nothing under it drains and nothing holds an edge, so planting it again just buys another season of dirt. We cut the slope into timber steps so it's walkable, ran a gravel path where the mud was, curbed the lawn line so the sod stays a lawn, set evergreens in rock rings for structure that still holds in January, and put a rock bed against the foundation so water leaves the house instead of sitting on it.

Same fence, same trees, same footprint. Different yard, because the fixes went underneath the pretty part first.

The dates on this landscape install are real, and the speed came from the plan.

August 14th is fabric down and rock going in around the evergreens. September 4th is the curb poured, the sod in, the beds mulched and the lawn already holding a clean line. What happened in between wasn't a bigger crew rushing. It was grading and drainage settled before the first delivery, materials staged in the order they go in, and each step finished before the next one starts, so nothing gets torn out and redone.

Fast is just what right looks like when the prep is done first.

Four Denver yards, four different problems, one standard for the after.

A patchy front lawn became turf circles set in white rock with planting rings, so it reads clean from the street and asks for almost nothing. A gray fence that had quit became new cedar with a rock strip at its feet. An overgrown slope became timber and flagstone steps you can actually use. A bare dirt strip along a fence became evergreens in rock rings with a gravel path beside them.

Different materials every time, because the yard decides that. The rules don't change: matched grade, edges that hold, water that leaves, and plants that still look right in February.
