Probably my favorite persimmon variety is the Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro!
If you’ve never tried one, you’re missing out! Unlike a lot of persimmons, this is a non-astringent variety, meaning you can eat it right off the tree while it’s still firm, just like an apple. The fruit is large, sweet, mild, and has a great flavor.
One of the things I really like about this variety is how early it ripens, usually September through October, which is right about now here in South Louisiana.
It’s also a naturally smaller tree, typically growing around 10–15 feet tall, so it’s a great choice for anyone who wants to grow fruit in their backyard without needing a ton of space.
If you’re thinking about planting a persimmon tree, Ichi-Ki-Kei-Jiro would definitely be one of my top recommendations!
