Storms don't wait, and a little prep today can save you a major headache. Here's what to check before hurricane Isaias rolls in:
Your AC unit: If your outdoor unit could end up in standing water, shut off power at the breaker before the storm arrives. Water in the compressor usually means an expensive repair. While you're out there, clear away any loose branches, pots, or debris nearby so nothing becomes a hazard in high wind.
Your plumbing: Locate your main water shutoff and test that it actually turns, a stuck valve is a bad surprise mid-storm. If flooding is likely in your area, shut off irrigation lines and backflow preventers too. Anything loose outside, hoses, drain covers, fixtures, bring it in or tie it down.
Your electrical system: Stay away from your panel if it's wet or you're standing in water, period. If the power needs to be cut and it isn't safe to get to the panel yourself, that's a job for a professional, not a DIY moment. Take a few quick photos of your HVAC, water heater, and panel now too, it'll make things easier if you need to file a claim later.
After the storm passes, resist the urge to flip anything back on that got wet, your AC, water heater, or panel included, until it's been checked out by a professional. Equipment that took on water can fail or become dangerous the moment it's powered back up.
Once it's safe to be back on the roads, we'll be ready to come assess and repair.
Stay safe out there, Mobile and Baldwin County!!
