A roofing sample can look very different in your hand than it does across an entire home.

Your roof takes up a significant portion of the home’s exterior, so color strongly influences the finished look. A shade that seems subtle on a small sample may feel much lighter, darker, warmer, or cooler once it covers the full roof.

It also has to work with features that aren’t changing with the roof. Brick, stone, siding, trim, and other exterior finishes all have colors and undertones that can affect how a roofing color looks once everything is together.

And unlike paint, most homeowners don’t plan to change a roof again in a few years.

Before choosing a color, look beyond the sample itself. Consider the entire exterior and how you want the home to look once the project is complete.

A storm shouldn’t be the first time you hear the name of your roofing company.

Dixie Roofing has never built its business around following storms from one neighborhood to the next. Roofing is what we do every day, from repairs and replacements to new construction and custom home projects throughout the Greater Houston area.

That matters because your roof will need to perform long after the storm has passed. You should know who worked on it, be able to ask questions about the work, and feel confident that the recommendation you received was based on your roof rather than the opportunity created by the weather.

A clogged gutter doesn’t stop the rain. It changes where the water goes.

Your gutters collect water coming off the roof and move it away from the home. When leaves, pine needles, and other debris block that path, water can overflow instead of draining where it should.

That overflow can repeatedly expose fascia and areas along the roofline to moisture. Water may also spill down near the foundation instead of being directed away from the house.

And the longer debris sits in the gutter, the easier it is to forget there’s a problem until the next heavy rain shows you.

There’s a lot happening around your home on roofing day, and the work shouldn’t come at the expense of the property below it.

Before the old roofing materials start coming off, protecting the area around the home matters. Tarps help cover landscaping and other areas where debris could fall, while keeping the jobsite organized throughout the project makes the final cleanup easier and more thorough.

Once the roof is complete, attention turns back to the ground. Materials, packaging, old shingles, nails, and other debris from the project need to leave with the roofing crew, not stay behind for the homeowner to deal with.

A finished roof may be the most visible part of the project, but we believe how your property is treated along the way matters, too.

Good roofing work should leave you looking at your new roof, not cleaning up after the crew.

Halloween decorations are going up, but your shingles shouldn’t be part of the decorating plan.

Nails and screws used to secure decorations can create holes in roofing materials and leave behind a potential path for water. Heavy decorations can also put unnecessary weight on areas that weren’t designed to hold them.

Then there’s getting everything up there in the first place. Walking across a roof can damage roofing materials if you don’t know where or how to step, and climbing onto a roof always comes with a safety risk.

If you’re decorating outside this Halloween, look for ways to use your yard, porch, siding, or other areas of the home instead. If decorations are going near the roofline, avoid anything that requires puncturing or putting unnecessary weight on the roof.
