We’re one of the few left who still hand-nails over using pneumatic nail guns on all residential job-sites.

With hand-nailing, our installers can feel each nail being driven and stop when the nail head is properly seated flush with the shingle rather than cutting into it. With nail guns, air pressure, temperature, hose length, decking hardness, and installer speed can contribute to overdriven, underdriven, or angled nails.

For an asphalt-shingle roof, potential advantages of hand-nailing include:

• Better control of nail depth: Less chance of blasting the nail head through or deeply into the shingle.
• More deliberate nail placement: It encourages installers to hit the manufacturer’s designated nailing zone rather than firing rapidly.
• Fewer high/underdriven nails: A nail left proud can interfere with the shingle above and potentially cause problems.
• Less dependence on compressor settings: Different areas of decking can vary considerably in hardness.
• Quality-control selling point: When combined with experienced installers and proper nail placement, hand-nailing emphasizes workmanship rather than installation speed.

It’s becoming a standard for us to fix other’s mistakes. Besides replacing 90 sqs of faulty GAF shingles with a CertainTeed Landmark integrity roof system and included an Attic Breeze 35W solar attic fan, we discovered the back porch addition had a chimney’s edge free floating, improperly flashed, and leaking.

To solve this, we installed 2-2x8x20 positioned along the edge and attached to the top plates. We also fabricated custom z-bar flashing around the perimeter before reattaching the stone.
