Between the summer harvest volume, sun, mosquitoes, events, and the rest of this wonderful season, I am wrung out and a lil weird by the end of August.

Part 2 of harvesting for my flower farm’s FIRST wedding! I split the harvest into 2 days and just finished before the storms hit.
I grew these flowers specifically for the couple- our bride even planted them with her mom ❤️ follow along as we get to the big day.

Wedding week prep harvest day 2, and I am racing a storm to finish the harvest before it hits.
Especially if you’re DIY-ing your own wedding or event flowers, do yourself a favor and practice first. It always takes longer than you think. From harvest to prep to chill time, you won’t know how long it takes until you’ve done it. There’s also more materials than you’d expect once you’re cutting for a full order instead of a bouquet. The best thing a trial season gives you is confidence in your harvest method, your timing, and knowing your flowers will actually hold until the big day.

My whole year has been building to this week- I’ve spent months prepping for this harvest by harvesting and selling weekly, vase testing, becoming more efficient, ect.
I can hardly take all the credit though! From each customer, partnership, person who has shown up at the pop up, my family, and thoughtful check in, you’ve been instrumental too 💕

Messing up “water” is one of many flower fears I have 😆 I’m cleaning my buckets to remove debris, bacteria, ect that could harm my flowers. I’ve found zinnias to be very sensitive to tap water- the chlorine maybe? So I’m using my hose filter for the first time. The water smelled funky so I ran it for a little and did some test buckets before the big harvest. I also filled up the buckets so they could air out overnight.

I am closing in on the delivery day for our first wedding! One Wedding Farm is providing the flowers to a florist who will work her magic for Piper Pi Vintage Bridal

I’ve been testing out a styrofoam giant “cup holders” method for transport. So far so good 🤞
Pros: cheap, customizable, light, packable.
Cons: styrofoam is plastic, lots of foam to vacuum

If you must, here are a few tips for safer pesticide use around pollinators:

Be absolutely certain you’re using the right product for the job. Ex: neem isn’t usually a “kill on contact” spray, instead it works when ingested by an insect. Insecticidal soaps can be more immediate for certain insects.

Always spray away from blooms and follow the label instructions. Factor in the weather too. Ex: extreme heat or rain is a good reason to skip the application and wait for a better day.

* Even if you don’t spray, your neighbors might. Adding a hedge or fence line between your space and neighboring properties can reduce pesticide drift significantly. If you go the hedge route, choose shrubs with low pest pressure so they won’t become a spray target themselves.
