VENOM SPRAYING: When their nest is threatened, female workers can actually sq**rt or spray venom from their stingers. They target the eyes of vertebrate intruders, which can cause intense pain and temporary blindness.

FACIAL RECOGNITION: Researchers have found that bald-faced hornets are able to recognize human faces and remember individuals they perceive as threats.

SMOOTH STINGERS: Unlike honeybees, they have completely smooth stingers. This allows an individual hornet to sting a victim repeatedly without losing its stinger or dying.

END-OF-SEASON "MADNESS": In autumn, once the new queens and males are reared, the social structure of the colony breaks down completely. Workers are known to go "berserk," throwing remaining larvae out of the nest and building strange, nonsensical paper shapes.

* NATURAL PEST CONTROL: They are highly specialized predators that
actively hunt yellowjackets. This keeps competitive yellowjacket populations in check around their territory.
