In the desert, water is everything.
The San Luis I Land Port of Entry North Annex Building was designed with that truth at its center. Greywater from interior plumbing is stored, treated, and cycled back through the building’s water closets, delivering nearly 45% water use savings. When it rains, water cascades from the roof into a collection basin, then flows out to irrigate the native, drought-tolerant landscape surrounding the port.
Paired with a daylighting strategy that reaches deep into the 24/7 operation — sawtooth ceilings, slot skylights, full-height glazing, and a solar-ready energy envelope, the building earned LEED Gold certification and set a performance benchmark for the full campus modernization and expansion which is now underway and targeting Net Zero energy.
At Jones Studio, we believe deeply that a port of entry can and should be efficient and dignified, secure and welcoming, built for the surrounding environment and for the people who use it daily.
