Every day, thousands of commuters, trucks, and freight carriers move through the Rose Quarter corridor. It's one of the most critical transportation hubs in the Pacific Northwest and contains the only two-lane section of I-5 through a major urban area between Canada and Mexico. The convergence of I-5, I-84, and I-405 can also bring some of Oregon's most persistent congestion challenges, making reliable mobility a priority for both the regional economy and the community.

To address these challenges, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) selected the Hamilton | Sundt joint venture to deliver the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project, and we're thrilled to share that work is now underway. The project is designed to improve safety and mobility while creating stronger connections between the communities surrounding the corridor. In addition, a cover will be constructed over the freeway to facilitate the reconnection of the Albina neighborhood, enhancing connectivity and supporting community revitalization efforts.

Before shovels hit the dirt, intentional collaboration helped lay the groundwork. Partnering alongside ODOT, the team worked within evolving project requirements and a budget that was constrained. Stakeholder coordination with Union Pacific Railroad, TriMet, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), and the surrounding communities was also key. That proactive preconstruction effort helped position the project for successful delivery while maintaining its vision of reducing congestion, improving freight movement, enhancing multimodal access, and creating new opportunities for future community development.

As early work progresses—including drainage improvements, bridge and seismic enhancements, barrier upgrades, and other critical infrastructure improvements—we're proud to partner with ODOT on an investment that will deliver lasting benefits.

From construction to modernizations, Sundt has been an integral part of building and maintaining the Val Vista Water Treatment Plant in Mesa, Arizona.

We built the facility in 1975 to support the growing Phoenix metro population. Since then, our team has provided updates to the filtration system, general modernization upgrades and added a reservoir split to better manage water distribution.

Our deep knowledge of the site and systems paired with four decades of relationships with the Val Vista Team has helped keep us building for them. Learn more about the project: https://bit.ly/44go2ND

Over the years, Project Executive Steve Van Loan has built lasting relationships and a reputation for delivering projects that make a difference.

“I started my career as a structural engineer but was quickly drawn to construction and the daily problem solving,” Steve said. “I enjoy being part of a team working toward a common goal and delivering a project that meets or exceeds client expectations. It is just as important to me that those clients become long-term colleagues and friends.”

Now a project executive at Sundt, Steve serves as project director with the Metropolitan Water Services of Nashville & Davidson County, helping lead work at the historic Omohundro and K.R. Harrington treatment plants—a project that will have a lasting impact on the community.

“My focus is making sure the client continues to see Sundt as their CMAR of choice for this generational project.”

Steve has over 37 years in the industry and has contributed to projects ranging from semiconductor manufacturing and advanced tech to water treatment plants and student housing.

Throughout his career, strong mentorship has played a key role in his growth. Leaders like John Messick, Ryan Nessen, and Greg Ayres have provided guidance, encouragement, and valuable leadership insight.

Thank you Steve for being KAPBCS!

High above Downtown Los Angeles, Sundt’s work at Arizona State University’s California Center was impossible to miss as a massive crane lifted new 300-ton chillers into place.

The project included replacing two aging chillers with new high-efficiency units, along with cooling tower refurbishments, controls upgrades, pump improvements, and other central plant enhancements designed to support the facility for years to come.

Decades after our first project with Arizona State University, it’s exciting to see that partnership reaching skylines beyond Arizona.

Sundt is helping build the future of healthcare education on California’s North Coast.

Construction is underway on Cal Poly Humboldt’s 41,781-square-foot Health Education Hub, transforming the Stewart Building into a modern, simulation-based learning environment. The renovation will feature advanced simulation labs, modern classrooms and dedicated student support spaces designed to enhance hands-on healthcare training.

Once complete in summer 2027, the project will expand nursing and allied health programs and help strengthen the region’s healthcare workforce. Check out more about this project: https://bit.ly/4o1MICK

Huge shoutout to the SR 202 Santan Freeway Widening team! With construction well over halfway complete and on track for a spring 2027 finish, Sundt has delivered major progress while generating more than $2.9 million in value engineering savings and implementing a first-of-its-kind material reuse effort for ADOT.

The project adds two general-purpose lanes in each direction between Loop 101 and Gilbert Road, plus an additional lane from Gilbert Road to Val Vista Drive. Sundt’s work includes bridge widening and replacement, retaining wall construction, and major pavement and drainage improvements.

A standout feature of the project is the reconstruction of 26 ramps through tightly coordinated 60-day closures. This approach has accelerated construction, reduced crews’ exposure to traffic, and minimized impacts to the traveling public. The team also adjusted closure sequencing to ensure access to major community events.

The project is also setting a new standard for sustainability. As ADOT’s first project to implement a newly Federal Highway Authority-approved material reuse method, the team recycled 100% of demolished concrete into aggregate base material, reducing landfill waste, lowering fuel consumption and emissions, and delivering additional savings.

The team has continuously found ways to improve value through strategic phasing, constructability reviews, and optimized earthwork, pavement, and drainage solutions. These efforts have delivered cost savings without compromising quality.

Stay tuned as this key infrastructure upgrade continues to take shape!
