Every day, thousands of commuters, trucks, and freight carriers move through the Rose Quarter corridor. It's one of the most critical transportation hubs in the Pacific Northwest and contains the only two-lane section of I-5 through a major urban area between Canada and Mexico. The convergence of I-5, I-84, and I-405 can also bring some of Oregon's most persistent congestion challenges, making reliable mobility a priority for both the regional economy and the community.
To address these challenges, the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) selected the Hamilton | Sundt joint venture to deliver the I-5 Rose Quarter Improvement Project, and we're thrilled to share that work is now underway. The project is designed to improve safety and mobility while creating stronger connections between the communities surrounding the corridor. In addition, a cover will be constructed over the freeway to facilitate the reconnection of the Albina neighborhood, enhancing connectivity and supporting community revitalization efforts.
Before shovels hit the dirt, intentional collaboration helped lay the groundwork. Partnering alongside ODOT, the team worked within evolving project requirements and a budget that was constrained. Stakeholder coordination with Union Pacific Railroad, TriMet, Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT), and the surrounding communities was also key. That proactive preconstruction effort helped position the project for successful delivery while maintaining its vision of reducing congestion, improving freight movement, enhancing multimodal access, and creating new opportunities for future community development.
As early work progresses—including drainage improvements, bridge and seismic enhancements, barrier upgrades, and other critical infrastructure improvements—we're proud to partner with ODOT on an investment that will deliver lasting benefits.
