Flow Hoods, Flow Meters, and Modern Workflows

Flow hoods and flow meters remain essential tools for TAB professionals, but instrument selection and field technique continue to play a major role in measurement quality.

The final technical session of the 2026 NBC Annual Conference will be presented by Scott Fielder, Director of Field Operations for Evergreen Telemetry.

The session will address:
• Flow-hood and flow-meter selection
• Proper field technique
• Wireless measurement workflows
• Real-time field data
• Measurement efficiency
• Technician productivity
• Practical TAB applications

Scott is a veteran TAB trainer and field professional who will present practical ways to use modern instruments, wireless sensors, and real-time information to improve both productivity and measurement quality.

The goal is not simply to collect more data. It is to help technicians collect useful data efficiently while maintaining dependable field practices.

A TAB report is only as reliable as the measurements used to create it.
NBC places strong emphasis on proper instrument selection, maintenance, calibration, setup, and application. Different measurements require different tools, procedures, and levels of accuracy.

TAB professionals must understand:
• Instrument operating ranges
• Measurement limitations
• Required straight duct or pipe conditions
• Proper probe placement
• Temperature and density corrections
• Repeatability of readings
• Calibration requirements
• The effect of turbulence on accuracy

Simply obtaining a number is not enough. The professional must determine whether that number is reasonable, repeatable, and representative of actual system performance.

NBC promotes measurement practices that support accurate, defensible, and professional TAB results.

Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing requires more than collecting readings. TAB professionals must also understand how equipment is intended to operate, how systems respond under different conditions, and how performance problems affect the building as a whole.

The 2026 NBC Annual Conference will include technical education on:

• Make-up air units
• Dedicated outdoor air systems
• Energy-recovery ventilation systems
• Duct leakage and sealing
• Carrier unit configurations and operating modes
• Equipment sequences and setup considerations
• Airflow station application and controls integration
• Performance factors affecting TAB and commissioning

These sessions will help connect equipment operation with the field measurements and verification procedures performed by TAB and commissioning professionals.

Attendees will hear from representatives of Air Control Products/Greenheck, Aeroseal, EBTRON, Carrier Corporation, Instruments Direct, and Evergreen Telemetry.

Join us September 28–29, 2026, for two days centered on better measurement, better decisions, and better-performing systems.

The tools available to TAB professionals continue to advance, but technology only creates value when it is properly selected, applied, verified, and interpreted.

The 2026 NBC Annual Conference will examine several areas where modern technology and field practice directly intersect:

Clamp-on ultrasonic hydronic flow measurement
Permanent airflow measurement stations
Flow hoods and flow meters
Wireless sensors and real-time field data
Controls integration and system verification
Instrument selection and proper field technique

Attendees will learn about equipment setup, application limitations, measurement reliability, modern workflows, and practical methods for improving technician productivity and data quality.

The goal is not simply to introduce new instruments. It is to help attendees understand how to use measurement technology responsibly and how to recognize when the conditions surrounding a reading may affect its accuracy.

The conference will be held September 28–29, 2026, at the NBC Training & Education Center in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.

Registration is $400, with lunch included both days.

Successful Testing, Adjusting, and Balancing begins long before an instrument is placed in an air outlet or connected to a hydronic balancing valve.

NBC emphasizes the importance of verifying system readiness before final

TAB work begins. This includes reviewing conditions such as:
• Equipment startup and proper rotation
• Completed ductwork and piping
• Clean filters, coils, and strainers
• Open dampers and balancing valves
• Functional control systems
• Correct fan and pump operation
• Completed ceiling and building-envelope conditions
• Accessible testing and balancing devices

When a system is not ready, measurements may be inaccurate and adjustments may not produce lasting results.

NBC promotes proper planning, communication, and preliminary evaluation so TAB professionals can identify deficiencies early and help projects move toward successful completion.

Bring your questions, concerns, ideas, and recommendations to the 2026 NBC Annual Conference.

The conference will include two interactive NBC panel discussions featuring NBC leadership, trainers, proctors, evaluators, and program representatives.

These sessions are intended to be honest, audience-driven conversations about the issues that matter to certified professionals, certification candidates, member firms, trainers, and the TAB industry.

Planned discussion topics include:

• Certification pathways and program governance
• Separation of trainer, proctor, evaluator, and decision-maker responsibilities
• Procedural Standards development
• Examination integrity and program credibility
• Training resources and program improvements
• Member and firm support
• Industry recognition and acceptance
• NBC’s future priorities and direction

This is an opportunity to hear directly from the people involved in NBC’s certification and training programs—and to make your voice part of the discussion.

Strong TAB firms are built by professionals who continue learning, asking questions, improving their measurement practices, and understanding how equipment performance affects the entire HVAC system.

The 2026 NBC Annual Conference is an opportunity for technicians, supervisors, firm owners, managers, engineers, commissioning providers, and industry partners to spend two full days learning from experienced technical presenters and one another.

Attendees will receive field-focused information on:
• Ultrasonic flow-meter applications
• MAU, DOAS, and ERV systems
• Duct sealing and leakage reduction
• Airflow measurement stations
• Carrier unit operation
• Flow hoods, flow meters, and wireless measurement workflows
• NBC certification, training, standards, and program development

The value of professional education does not end when the conference is over. Attendees can take new ideas, improved practices, and important industry conversations back to their technicians, firms, and projects.
