Throughout his life, Leland was well known in the state of Utah for his horticultural knowledge and expertise. After graduating from The Davey Institute of Tree Surgery in Kent, Ohio, Leland specialized in arbor care. He developed a variety of pruning systems and pioneered the practice

of injecting iron and other nutrients into sick trees. Throughout his career, he nurtured the landscapes of many government buildings, businesses and private homes along the Wasatch Front. Leland Behunin established a high standard in the field of arbor care, and he passed those traditions to his son Benjamin Behunin Sr. When Leland retired in the late 1960’s, Ben took over his father’s tree service company. In 1971, Benjamin graduated from Brigham Young University with a B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture. The company continued to focus in arbor care, working on LDS Temple Grounds and LDS church properties. He also acted as a consultant on a variety of commercial projects regarding tree health. Ben Behunin SR has worked for the last 30 years with his son Ben S. Ben became a certified arborist in 2000 and is a registered tree appraiser. He also serves on the Community Forest Council and Riverton Tree Board. With over 70 years of experience behind them, Behunin Horticulture is the best choice for care of your trees.

The Plant Institute is seeking homeowners for a limited water conservation research pilot program.

**This pilot program is currently being proposed for grant funding.** We are building a list of interested participants now so that we can move forward quickly if funding is awarded.

If selected, your trees and landscape will be professionally maintained at **NO COST TO YOU** while we evaluate the effectiveness of the JLB Canopy Management System and its impact on outdoor water use.

We are especially interested in serving:

🇺🇸 Disabled Veterans
👴 Elderly Homeowners
❤️ Caregivers Managing a Property for a Loved One
🦽 Individuals with Physical Limitations or Medical Conditions
🏡 Homeowners Who Have Difficulty Maintaining Their Landscape

Unlike many conservation programs that require removing plants or redesigning landscapes, this pilot focuses on maintaining beautiful, healthy landscapes while exploring opportunities to reduce water demand.

# # # Preliminary Participant Requirements

✔ Must own and occupy the property
✔ Landscape should have been established and maintained for at least the past 2 years
✔ Must be willing to provide approximately 2 years of water-use records or utility billing history
✔ Must allow before-and-after photos for research and educational purposes
✔ Must allow periodic site visits and data collection throughout the pilot
✔ Must permit a small Plant Institute Research Demonstration Site sign during the study period
