Every great project starts with a vision.

For this detached 3-car garage in Simpsonville, we began by clearing the site, preparing the lot, managing drainage, and excavating for a foundation designed to support over 1,500 square feet of finished space.

Once the slab was poured, our framing crews got to work bringing the structure to life. Watching a project rise from the ground is one of the most rewarding parts of the building process.

This isn’t just a place to park vehicles. It’s being built as a fully finished, climate-controlled extension of the homeowner’s property.

This project features one of the largest decks we’ve ever completed—crafted with an extremely dense tropical hardwood known for its unmatched durability and longevity. The rich medium-brown to reddish hues bring a natural warmth that only gets better with time.

To elevate the design, we installed the decking boards at a 45° angle from the house creating an accent that adds movement and visual interest as you transition down a custom staircase to a private 10x10 platform below. Acumen Builders often responds to 5-Star reviews by declaring “we work with some of the best clients in the upstate.” While this is true, Acumen Builders receives those 5-Star reviews largely because it has some of the best employees in the upstate.

James Fedele has been with Acumen for over 5 years and has been Josh Bennett’s right-hand man. James is a multi-trade carpenter and builder whose skills allow Acumen to function with less staff and more talent.

As builders, Acumen works in our client’s homes and garages and master bathrooms, which makes integrity, honesty, and trustworthiness a top priority in our professional relationship. James has a personal value system rooted in his own faith and morality that mirrors Acumen’s care and respect for clients so well that we have to acknowledge that a portion of our reputation is actually James’ integrity credited on us.

Acumen Builders became the HBA ”Remodeler of the Year” thanks to employees like James, and we just wanted to acknowledge him today.

Building Intentionally goes beyond the jobsite.

Recently, Josh Bennett, co-owner of Acumen Builders, along with James and Paul, members of the Acumen team, traveled to a rural community in Ethiopia to help build a school for children of Omo Valley.

For several weeks, they worked side-by-side with local builders—laying block, framing, and using their skills to serve a mission far greater than themselves.

This school is being built with a purpose that reaches beyond its walls. In a region impacted by ongoing tribal conflict, the hope is that children from different tribes will come together in one place to learn compassion, respect, and peace—side by side. The vision is simple but powerful: when children are taught to love and respect their fellow man, generations of division can begin to heal.

At Acumen Builders, we don’t just build with professionalism—we build with purpose. Giving back, serving others, and using our skills to make a lasting impact is part of who we are. This trip reflects our belief that intentional building can change lives, communities, and futures.

We are incredibly proud of Josh, James, and Paul for representing Acumen so well, and for reminding us that some of our most important work is building hope in the Upstate and around the world.
