It can be intimidating to ID cane toads. No one wants to accidentally mis-ID a southern as a cane toad or vice versa. After handling a few hundred toads, it gets easier, but not everyone will have the opportunity to handle a few hundred toads. 🤣 I'm hoping to make it a little easier for you to make an ID with the help of Mr. Scott Flavelle, who provided these amazing side by side comparison shots! August is Toad Olympics!

Are you in South Tampa and want to try your hand at catching cane toads? Toad Olympics began as a friendly competition between two goofy ladies who love their community and have a passion for the environment. Things look a little different this year now that The Toad Lady is official. Beginning this year, we want to empower people to join the fight to keep cane toads under control. For the month of August, we track how many cane toads each participant catches and collect a small fee for pickup from community members. The proceeds will be used for a dinner for anyone who participates and the overall winner, who will take half, so if you’d like to participate, comment below and we will reach out with the details!

PSA: please do not waste your money on products that claim to repel frogs and toads (or snakes, for that matter). First, there is no evidence they are effective. Second, they don’t differentiate between species and harm all species equally. Third, there is no way to know just how much harm these compounds cause across the ecological spectrum.

The ONLY safe and effective way to control invasive cane toad and Cuban tree frog populations is to remove them manually, without chemicals, and humanely euthanize them. If you’re in the Tampa area, we might be able to help with that! Visit www.thetoadlady.com for more info!
