Hurricane season has officially begun, and for communities across the Gulf Coast and Sunbelt, resilience is no longer optional. It’s infrastructure planning. At Streetleaf, we believe outdoor lighting should continue working when communities need it most. It's National Hurricane Preparedness Week. In 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton hit Tampa Bay back to back. Milton alone left more than 3 million utility customers across Florida without power. Through both storms, 1,129 Streetleaf solar streetlights held a 99.61% reliability rate. Any lights that had issues were restored within 24 hours.

When the grid goes out, lighting becomes a public safety issue. Pedestrian injuries are twice as likely at poorly lit intersections, and crime rates climb 2.6% after outages lasting 10 hours or more.

Trees were running on solar power long before we thought to try it. The nearly 6,000 trees planted through our restoration projects over the last year will, at maturity, absorb the carbon equivalent of taking 368 cars off the road for a year. Nature still does it best. Happy Arbor Day.

Something we’ve been doing quietly: for every light we install at Streetleaf, we plant a tree.

That means 12,470 trees planted so far, with more going in the ground every month. Through our partnership with Veritree, we’re supporting mangrove restoration in Tanzania and longleaf pine planting in Florida’s Withlacoochee State Park. Longleaf pines are a native species known for their resilience in drought and wildfire conditions. Both efforts help restore ecosystems, sequester carbon, and create paid work for local planting communities.

With Earth Day tomorrow and Arbor Day around the corner, this felt like the right time to share it. More to come.
