I’m deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Juan Alberto Moya, FAPIA’s Immediate Past President.
As a Past President of FAPIA—two terms before Juan—there was a bond between us built on the same mission: fighting the fair fight on behalf of policyholders. That shared purpose united Juan and me, and it’s the same purpose that unites everyone in our association.
Juan had a rare mix of sharp humor, warmth, and humility. He made people feel welcome, and he had a genuine gift for lifting others up. Education and mentorship weren’t side projects for him—they were part of who he was, and his leadership helped shape countless careers.
I also got to know Juan more personally after Hurricanes Helene and Milton, when he and Past President John Hornbuckle came into my area to assist with CAT work. Juan showed up, worked hard, and never made it about himself. I’m grateful I got to spend time with him, even at my home, and to see firsthand the man he was beyond any title.
In speaking with Nancy Dominguez and with Frank Altieri—our current FAPIA President—it’s clear Juan’s passing is being felt deeply. He will be missed sorely by our current board of directors and staff, and by every member who had the privilege of working alongside him.
My heart is especially heavy for his wife of 38 years, Mirna, his children, and his grandchildren, who I know saw him as larger than life. Mis oraciones están con Mirna y con toda la familia de Juan Moya.
Life is so up and down, and only God can keep it in perspective spiritually. May God bring comfort and strength to Juan’s family. Descansa en paz, my friend Juan.
