In the early 19th century, most American women couldn’t inherit property or make even half of a man’s wages in the jobs available to them. It was around this period that many women started to demand more political rights and representation.

By the early 1900s, several countries, including Finland, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, had started legalizing voting for women. In the U.S., the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was first introduced in 1878 but was roundly rejected, as it failed to gain any traction. During this time, there was widespread opposition to the women’s suffrage movement. The subject of women’s voting rights was then shelved at the highest political level for more than 40 years.

It wasn’t until the outbreak of World War I that the 19th Amendment and women’s suffrage started gaining momentum in Congress. Women across America made such an outstanding contribution to the war effort that their calls for suffrage became impossible to ignore. Women’s rights groups also pointed out the hypocrisy of fighting for democracy in Europe while denying it to half of the American citizens at home.

Constitutional amendments require approval from two-thirds of the states, so 36 states had to ratify the 19th Amendment before its passage. The deciding vote in the Tennessee legislature came from Harry T. Burn, a young state representative whose mother’s plea to support the amendment became a deciding factor in his vote. Congress passed the 19th Amendment in 1919 as a result of the long and hard work put in by the women’s suffrage movement, led by suffragists such as Susan B. Anthony and Cady Stanton.

To remind us of the struggles of the past, present, and future, Congress designated August 26th as Women’s Equality Day in 1971.

Do you have an elderly person in your life that you love and appreciate? National Senior Citizens Day, August 21, is the day to let them know how much you care and it’s an opportunity to recognize their accomplishments. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan proclaimed this holiday to raise awareness about issues that affect senior citizens and their quality of life.

Today, seniors are still active in their communities as well as continuing to have a strong presence in the workforce. For all they do and have achieved for the good of their communities, senior citizens deserve our thanks!
