🏡 Homeowners: what’s one project around your house that keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the list?

It’s funny how the little things become part of the house after a while.

A piece of trim that still needs to be finished.
A deck board that needs attention.
A room you’ve wanted to update for two years.
That one project you walk past every day and think, “We really need to take care of that.”

Working in carpentry and home improvements, we see it all the time — and sometimes those smaller unfinished items eventually turn into much bigger projects.

So I’m curious…

🪵 KEVIN’S CARPENTER TIP TUESDAY

Square, level, and plumb are three different things, and in carpentry, all three matter.

It’s something most homeowners probably never think about, but a good carpenter is constantly checking all three.

📏 Level means perfectly horizontal.

⬆️ Plumb means perfectly vertical.

📐 Square means two surfaces or lines meet at a true 90-degree angle.

And here’s where experience comes in: the house itself isn’t always any of them.

Walls can be out of plumb. Floors can be out of level. Corners that look square may not actually be square, especially in older homes.

That means installing cabinets, doors, trim, built-ins, or other finish work isn’t always as simple as measuring, cutting, and attaching it. Sometimes the real skill is knowing how to compensate for what’s already there so the finished work looks right, fits right, and functions the way it should.

After 30+ years in carpentry and construction, I can tell you, sometimes the most important measurements are the ones homeowners never see.

After over 30 years in carpentry and construction, here’s something every homeowner should know…

Don’t assume your home is perfectly level, plumb, or square.

Especially in older homes, walls may not be perfectly straight, floors may be slightly out of level, and corners aren’t always a perfect 90 degrees. Homes can experience normal movement over time, and materials like wood naturally expand and contract as moisture levels change.

That’s why experienced carpenters measure what’s actually there instead of assuming everything is perfectly square. Whether it’s trim, cabinetry, built-ins, flooring, stairs, or a custom carpentry project, those small adjustments are what create a clean, professional finish.

It’s often the details you don’t notice that separate an average job from exceptional craftsmanship.

Not all pressure-treated lumber is ready to be stained or sealed.

One of the biggest misconceptions we hear is, “The deck is finished, so it’s ready to stain.” In many cases, that’s actually too soon.

Pressure-treated lumber contains moisture from the treatment process and needs time to dry before it’s stained or sealed. Applying a finish too early can prevent proper absorption, leading to peeling, uneven color, or a finish that doesn’t last as long as it should.

💧 Here’s a simple test:
Place a few drops of water on the wood.

✅ If the water soaks in, it’s generally ready to be stained or sealed.
❌ If the water beads up on the surface, it usually needs more time to dry.

Waiting until the wood is ready helps your stain perform better and protect your investment for years to come.

Don’t compare estimates by price alone.

When you’re getting estimates for a home improvement project, don’t just look at the bottom line. Ask a few important questions first:

✅ What materials are being used?
✅ What’s included—and what isn’t?
✅ Will the owner be involved in the project?
✅ Is the company fully insured?
✅ Is there a workmanship warranty?

The lowest estimate isn’t always the best value, and the highest estimate doesn’t always mean the best quality.
