This is what our scan-to-BIM process actually looks like. We capture a site with terrestrial laser scanning (left), then build it into a classified BIM model (right) — every steel member identified, dimensioned, and logged with how much of it we actually saw. That model becomes the foundation for renovation and retrofit planning, catching clashes before design even starts, and a permanent digital as-built record you can hand off to the next phase.

There's an interesting new study making the rounds in the surveying/mapping world, and it's worth sharing because it cuts right to a question we get asked a lot: "why not just use the newest scanning tech and skip the traditional survey work?"

BCIT Geomatics recently field-tested a photogrammetric SLAM mobile-mapping system against traditional Total Station/GNSS RTK surveying for mapping infrastructure assets. The results were genuinely impressive — the SLAM system hit 13-15mm accuracy, actually beating RTK in some conditions, and held up even on wet pavement.

But here's the part that didn't make the flashy headlines: the researchers were clear that it was the ground control network — not the sensor — that made those results survey-grade. Take away the control points and experienced setup, and even the best hardware drifts.

That's the piece we live by every day. New scanning and mapping tools keep getting better, and we're always evaluating them. But the technology is only as good as the methodology behind it. Solid control, proper QA/QC, and people who know how to catch a bad dataset before it becomes a bad design decision — that's what actually delivers data your engineers and architects can trust.

Cool study, and a good reminder that better tools don't replace good practice, they just raise the bar for what "good practice" needs to look like.
