This summer at Woodlawn Cemetery in Syracuse, we had the honor of caring for a family's headstone from start to finish. We cleaned it thoroughly, made space for flowers, planted geraniums and dusty miller, and maintained the site all season long.

At Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, we came across a monument for Austin Hall Burbank and Mary Eleanor "Nellie" Burbank, featuring 2 fully operational bronze books mounted on the face of the stone, with hinged pages that actually turn.

The Burbanks were prominent figures in Louisville's business and social circles in the late 1800s and early 1900s, part of the city's affluent local aristocracy. They are not household names like fellow Cave Hill residents Colonel Sanders or Muhammad Ali, their legacy rests almost entirely on this one extraordinary piece of funerary art.

Rather than crowd one face of stone with names and dates, the family had each bronze leaf cast front and back, creating a genealogical ledger with dates and life events — a family tree you can page through, layer by layer. Pieces like this were custom-ordered from specialized bronze foundries; real moving parts on a monument are rare.

What makes it even more remarkable is what it's survived. Decades of Kentucky's brutal summer humidity and winter freezes, and the hinges still turn - a lasting tribute built to carry a family's story.
