Hornets are in full swing already this season!! Here are some helpful hints when you see these types of nests
Identifying Hornets-
Look for Nests: Hornets build their nests in trees, shrubs, and sometimes under eaves or in attics. The nests are made from a paper-like material and can grow quite large.
Activity: Hornets are more active during the day. If you see hornets frequently in a particular area, there may be a nest nearby.
Preventing Hornet Problems
Seal Entry Points: Ensure that all potential entry points to your home are sealed, including gaps in windows, doors, and rooflines.
Remove Food Sources: Keep outdoor areas clean and free from food scraps, pet food, and sugary drinks, which can attract hornets.
Proper Trash Management: Use sealed trash cans and dispose of garbage regularly to avoid attracting hornets.
Dealing with Hornet Nests-
Professional Help: If you find a hornet nest, it is best to contact a professional pest control service. Hornets can be very aggressive when their nest is threatened, and professional removal is the safest option.
Personal Safety-
Avoid Disturbing Nests: Keep a safe distance from hornet nests and avoid disturbing them.
Protective Clothing: If you need to work in an area where hornets are active, wear long sleeves, pants, gloves, and a hat to reduce the risk of stings.
Stay Calm: If a hornet approaches you, remain calm and avoid swatting at it. Move away slowly without making sudden movements.
First Aid for Hornet Stings
Remove the Stinger: If stung, remove the stinger by scraping it off with a credit card or fingernail. Do not use tweezers, as squeezing can inject more venom.
Clean the Area: Wash the sting site with soap and water.
Apply Ice: Use an ice pack to reduce swelling and pain.
Over-the-Counter Remedies: Over-the-counter antihistamines and pain relievers can help alleviate symptoms.
Seek Medical Attention: If you experience severe reactions such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, or dizziness, seek emergency medical help immediately as these can be signs of an allergic reaction.
By taking precautions and knowing how to handle encounters with hornets, you can reduce the risk of stings and safely enjoy the outdoors during hornet season.
