Spring Pest Spotlight: Ants

Every spring, ants are one of the first pests to show up across the Chicagoland area. Once the ground starts warming up, they get active fast, and what starts as a few scouts in the kitchen can turn into a much bigger issue before most people realize what's happening.

The thing is, the early signs are easy to dismiss. A small line of ants near the sink. A little dirt pushed up along a baseboard crack. Most of the time, people reach for a can of spray from the hardware store, see the ants disappear for a few days, and figure the problem is handled. But if the nest is still intact, they'll be back... and usually in greater numbers.

That's the part that catches people off guard. What you see on the surface is almost never the whole picture. Ant colonies are well-established by the time you notice them, and surface-level treatments don't reach the source.

We put together this quick series to help homeowners and business owners in the area know what to look for early in the season, understand why certain species are worth taking seriously, and know what to expect if things aren't dealt with properly the first time.

Ants are manageable. They're just a lot easier to deal with when you catch them early rather than after the colony has had weeks to settle in.

Today is the first day of spring, and if you own a home anywhere in the Illinois area, it is time to start paying attention to what is happening around your house.

Every year we get calls in June and July from homeowners who noticed something small in March and figured it could wait. Most of the time, it cannot. Here is what we are already seeing as things warm up.

Ants are the first thing most people spot. A thin trail near a window or along a baseboard. That trail means they have already found a way in, and they are telling the rest of the colony exactly where to go. It does not take long for a trail to become an infestation.

Rodents have been living in your walls, crawlspace, or garage all winter. Spring is when the evidence shows up. Chewed wood, small droppings near appliances, entry holes near utility lines. If you are just now finding these signs, they have been there a while.

Wasps are building. Queens come out of dormancy right around now and start constructing nests under eaves, inside soffits, around garage door frames. A golf-ball-sized nest today turns into a serious problem by July. Catching it early is quick and cheap. Waiting is neither.

Spiders pick up too, especially in basements and crawlspaces where they follow the other insects that are already moving.
