A tight space doesn’t mean you sacrifice design.

This custom winder stair was built to connect a new basement addition for a golf simulator room while maximizing every inch while keeping a clean, high-end look.

Solid wood construction, crisp white balusters, and a rich dark finish tie it all together while making the transition feel seamless with the rest of the home.

Winders done right aren’t just functional, they become a feature.

If you’ve got a challenging layout, we’ll turn it into something that works and looks right.

Built to match. Built to belong.

This Chicago stairway was all about bringing it back to what it used to be. We matched the old-school posts and crafted custom newels and balusters to mirror the existing details found throughout the multi-unit home.

From the profiles to the spacing, every piece was designed to tie in seamlessly, so nothing feels new, just right.

Whether it’s restoring a historic stair or building something clean and modern, MasterFlight can handle any style.

If you can picture it, we can build it.

Taking a design from concept to reality.

This modern floating staircase features white oak treads, frameless glass panels, and a continuous oak top rail that ties the entire system together with clean, seamless lines.

At MasterFlight Stairs, we take designs on paper and bring them to life through precision craftsmanship.

This week in the shop we started bending the inner stringer, also known as the open stringer. This side of the stair will feature balusters and a handrail, and it’s a much tighter radius than the wall stringer, under a 4’ circle.

The first section we’re bending is a self-supporting stringer, meaning there’s no wall beneath it. Because of that, we build in additional material to ensure the strength and rigidity needed to properly support the stair.

This week in the shop we’re bending a fresh set of curved wall-side stringers, what we call our pocketed stringers, designed with precise pockets for the treads and risers to lock into with wedges.

For this project, we’re fabricating the full stair kit to be shipped and installed on a job site in Iowa.

Up next: bending the outside open stringer. This one comes with a much tighter radius since it’s the inner stringer, always the more challenging bend, but that’s where the fun is.

This week in the shop: this is how we bend rails and stringers.
We set up a wall that matches the exact radius we’re after, then glue up the pieces in 1/4” laminations. This allows the material to bend smoothly to the curve. Once bent and the glue cures, the piece permanently retains that radius.

This example shows the bending of two small rails on a slight curve.

Before and after of a railing system we updated during a remodel.

For this project, we cut the round, turned tops off the existing newel posts and converted them to square newels for a clean, modern look—without disturbing the structural integrity of the staircase. This method is ideal when the original posts are integrated into the stair and full removal isn’t practical.

This staircase also received a new starter step, an updated railing system, and new nosings on the balcony. The stair balusters were able to go back into their existing holes, and with the new balcony nosing, we ensured the baluster spacing meets today’s safety standards.

If you’d like to modernize your staircase without a full rebuild, we’d be happy to help!

Here’s a look at the before and after of this staircase where we replaced newels, balusters and handrail. The finishing and painting were handled by others, but we made sure everything was built, fitted, and installed cleanly and accurately so it was ready for final finish.

The updated parts completely changed the look of this staircase, giving it a cleaner and more modern style while keeping the layout the same.

If you’re looking to update your railing system or swap out old stair parts for something more current, we can help.
