This week we received an urgent call from a homeowner whose pressure regulating valve had failed, causing pipes to burst more than once.

The homeowner had purchased a new PRV and was trying to replace it himself — and honestly, we respect that. We love handy homeowners who want to understand their home.

The problem was, the new PRV didn’t fit. At that point, the old one couldn’t go back on, the new one couldn’t be installed, and the home was suddenly without water.

We were able to get there quickly, make the correct adjustments, and restore water within the hour. Even better, we were able to use the PRV he already purchased, saving him time and money.

Seriously, we need to talk about this.

If your project involves plumbing, hire a licensed plumber.

This drain was installed by another contractor for a beautiful outdoor sink and dog washing station. From the outside, everything looked great. The problem? It didn’t work correctly.

The contractor said he knew what he was doing, but plumbing is one of those trades where the part you don’t see matters just as much as the part you do.

This could have been done right the first time by a trained, licensed professional. Instead, the homeowner is now paying twice — once for the original work, and again to have it fixed properly.

Unfortunately, weak enforcement and loopholes in contractor regulations allow situations like this to happen far too often. Homeowners are left assuming the person they hired was qualified, only to find out later that the work was never done properly.

You probably haven’t been told this, but your water heater needs to be flushed at least once a year.

In fact, the manufacturers recommend flushing it ONCE A MONTH.

Flushing it isn’t that hard to do at all. Simply connect a hose to the tank drain and open it up. You don’t need to turn off the heater, and you only need to flush it for a few minutes.

That being said, there’s more to a professional water heater flush. It’s like the difference between you brushing your teeth and the dentist cleaning your teeth.

If you don’t go to the dentist, your teeth will fall out. If you don’t have your plumber maintain your water heater, it will fail prematurely.

If your water heater sounds like popcorn, it's trying to tell you something is wrong. In Arizona, hard water leaves mineral sediment inside the bottom of the tank. This picture is a small sample of this. As that sediment builds up, it traps heat, cause popping or rumbling sounds, reduce efficiency, and shorten the life of the heater. Routinely flushing your water heater, replacing the anode rod and cleaning the vents will lengthen the lifespan of your water heater.
