What is dew point and why is it so dang important within your home? Oxford defines this as: the atmospheric temperature (varying according to pressure and humidity) below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form. 💦
So, again we ask, why is it so dang important?!?! Well, widespread mold growth within homes is typically the result of surface temperatures being below the dew point. This type of growth is commonly referred to as a humidity bloom. 🦠
In this instance, we’d like to focus on the attic of your home, as this is an area that rarely sees any activity. Take these images for example: Within all of the images, you’ll see a one common pattern. This pattern looks like a chunk of something missing in the middle, surrounded by black squiggley lines. Sounds official, right? 😂 This, my friends, is the result of a portion of your AC duct achieving a temperature that is lower than the attic dew point.
Over the course of a number of months, maybe years, water droplets have been falling from the duct, hitting this area in the middle. The impact of the water is slowly causing degradation to the surface, while also supplying the surrounding area with moisture - allowing for mold development. How do you fix this? Have a qualified professional ensure that the insulation around your AC ducts is sufficient enough to keep the cold in and the hot out! 🥶+🥵=💧
