⚡ THAT “HOT” OUTLET OR SWITCH ISN’T SOMETHING TO IGNORE ⚡
Switches and receptacles shouldn’t feel unusually hot during normal use. If you notice a hot faceplate, buzzing or crackling, a burning smell, discoloration, or melted plastic, stop using it and have it checked.
Common causes can include:
🔥 Loose or failing electrical connections

🔧 Improper wiring or damaged conductors

Most homeowners don't think about replacing a receptacle until it stops working—but an outlet can become worn long before it completely fails.
If a plug falls out easily, feels loose, only works when positioned a certain way, or you notice crackling or discoloration, it's time to have that receptacle checked.
A loose connection between a plug and receptacle can create resistance and heat, potentially damaging the receptacle, wiring, or equipment plugged into it.

DON’T IGNORE A WARM OUTLET OR SWITCH ⚡
An outlet or light switch should never feel noticeably hot during normal use. If you notice a warm receptacle, switch plate, discoloration, a buzzing sound, or the smell of overheated plastic, it could be a warning sign of an electrical problem hiding behind the wall.

GFCIs DON’T LAST FOREVER ⚡
GFCI protection is one of the most important electrical safety features in your home, but many homeowners don’t realize that GFCI receptacles can fail with age.
You’ll commonly find them in garages, kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas, crawl spaces, outdoors, and other locations where electricity and moisture may meet.
A quick homeowner check: press the TEST button on your GFCI receptacle. Power should shut off. Then press RESET and power should return. If it won’t trip, won’t reset, feels unusually warm, or keeps tripping without an obvious reason, it’s time to have it checked.
⚠️ And remember—a GFCI that keeps tripping may be doing exactly what it was designed to do. Simply replacing it without determining why it’s tripping can leave the real electrical problem unresolved.

🌩️ STORM SEASON ELECTRICAL SAFETY — ARE YOU READY? 🌩️
Here in the Lowcountry, severe thunderstorms can roll in quickly. Lightning gets most of the attention, but high winds, falling limbs, utility interruptions and power restoration can all create electrical problems around your home.
Before the next storm, take a few minutes to look around:
⚡ Make sure outdoor receptacle covers are intact and secure
⚡ Keep extension cords and temporary connections out of wet areas
⚡ Never approach a downed power line — always assume it is energized
⚡ If your home experiences flickering lights, unusual buzzing, burning odors or electrical problems after a storm, have the system checked
⚡ After an outage, don't ignore electrical equipment that suddenly begins behaving differently

⚡ TODAY’S PANEL CHANGE UNCOVERED MORE THAN WE EXPECTED ⚡
Today, Lindsey and Son Electric LLC replaced an aging Federal Pacific (FPE) Stab-Lok electrical panel with a new Square D Homeline panel.
Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panels have a well-documented history of concern involving breakers that may fail to trip properly during an overload or short-circuit condition. When a breaker doesn't operate as intended, wiring can continue to overheat—creating a serious fire hazard.
But once we began removing the old equipment, we discovered another major problem hidden inside the electrical system.
🔥 Severely deteriorated service-entrance/feeder conductor insulation with exposed conductor.
Over many years, conductor insulation can deteriorate from age, prolonged heat exposure, environmental conditions, and repeated thermal cycling. Older rubber and cloth-based insulation can eventually become brittle, crack, crumble, and separate from the conductor.
In this case, the deterioration was significant enough that we made the decision NOT to re-energize the electrical system until the damaged conductors are replaced.
Sometimes a panel replacement isn't just about installing new equipment—it's an opportunity to uncover hazards that have been hiding for decades.
Tomorrow we'll replace the deteriorated feeder and get this home back online with a much safer electrical system.
