A higher electric bill does not always mean your electrical system is using more power.

Austin Energy’s new rates took effect October 1. Although several bill components changed in different directions, the utility estimates the average electric bill will increase by about $3.66 per month.

That is a good reminder to look beyond the total before assuming something is wrong.

If a bill increases, start with a few practical questions:

* Did the price or fee structure change?

* Did actual kilowatt-hour usage increase?

* Were new appliances, equipment, tenants, or EV chargers added?

* Are exterior lights operating longer than intended?

* Are timers, photocells, or lighting controls working correctly?

* Did HVAC or other equipment begin running more often?

* Is the increase temporary, seasonal, or part of a continuing pattern?

Programs such as Harris County’s new community-solar initiative may eventually help eligible households lower their bills without rooftop panels.
But lower energy costs and backup power are two different goals.
A bill credit does not keep refrigeration, lighting, access controls, or other essential equipment operating during an outage.

Start by defining the problem you are trying to solve. Then review the numbers, the equipment, and the available options.

Plan the work. Work the plan.

When your electric bill changes, do you compare the actual usage—or only the amount due?

When was the last time someone checked your electrical system before something stopped working?

Texas utilities are investing in grid upgrades and using tools such as drone inspections to identify problems before they become outages. Property owners can apply that same principle on their side of the meter.

Preventive electrical maintenance does not mean replacing everything. It starts with understanding what you have and documenting what needs attention.

For a home, business, or apartment community, that may include:

* Checking panels and electrical equipment for visible deterioration

* Testing emergency and exterior lighting

* Reviewing recurring breaker trips, flickering lights, or warm devices

* Confirming timers, photocells, and lighting controls operate correctly

* Verifying available capacity before adding EV chargers, HVAC equipment, or other large loads

* Prioritizing repairs by safety, reliability, and operational impact

A planned assessment gives you information and options.

An emergency gives you a problem and a clock.

At Prodigal Son Services, we believe reliability begins with knowing the condition of the system you already own.

Plan the work. Work the plan.

Texas doesn’t just need more electricity. We need more people who know how to build, maintain, and protect the systems delivering it.

Recent reports show Texas reached record power demand this summer while contractors continue struggling to find qualified electricians and skilled craft professionals. At the same time, one high-voltage engineering company is establishing its North American headquarters in Dallas and planning 1,000 new jobs.

That tells us something important: the electrical industry isn’t slowing down. It is changing and expanding.

For a young person considering their future, this career can begin with a willingness to learn:

* Show up ready and on time.
* Be coachable.
* Learn basic math and how to read plans.
* Respect safety and follow instructions.
* Take pride in improving your skills.

An apprenticeship can lead to a career as a journeyman, foreman, superintendent, estimator, project manager, master electrician, contractor—or into controls, renewable energy and mission-critical work.

College is a good path for many people, but it is not the only path to a skilled, respected, and financially sustainable career.

We have to expose more young people to the trades and show them what is possible when knowledge, discipline, and opportunity come together.

Plan the work. Work the plan.

Who introduced you to the value of skilled trades—and which young person could benefit from that same conversation today?

What would you protect first if the power went out tonight—your food, your people, or your business?

Recent storm outages in Southeast Texas are a reminder to answer that question while there’s time to plan. Entergy reported roughly 80,000 customers lost service at the storm’s peak, with flooding making restoration more difficult.

For a homeowner, the priority might be refrigeration, a few lights, and communication. For a business or apartment community, it may include access systems and essential operations.

Start with a few practical questions:

• What equipment needs backup power?
• When were the emergency lights and backup system last tested?
• Are exterior lights working where people walk and enter the property?
• Which recurring electrical problems still need to be diagnosed?

A clear list helps you prioritize repairs and make informed decisions about improvements.

At Prodigal Son Services taking care of a property starts with understanding what you have, what needs attention, and what you want it to do.

Plan the work. Work the plan.

If the lights went out right now, what would you need to keep running—and do you know how long it would last?
