Grateful to finish another project for one of our favorite clients. Since building their home 25 years ago we have done countless projects for this family. This one was adding a small addition and renovation to the home we originally built. We added a scullery, mudroom and expanded the laundry room.

Although CAD has long been the industry standard and AI is becoming a more powerful design tool, I find there are still benefits to hand drawing. For conceptual design, drawing by hand can efficiently manipulate form, scale, proportion, space, order, orientation, and test these within the site-specific context. The act of hand drawing can facilitate the creative design process. The right side of the brain is associated with creativity and intuition and engaging it can help explore and express ideas beyond linear and analytical left-brain processing. This method allows for the communication of complex design strategies in a natural, aesthetic, and simple manner. While there’s no replacing computer-aided drawings in design, hand drawing keeps us connected to the art of architecture.
