How the City of Port St. Lucie is running us out of business

How the City of Port St. Lucie is running us out of business This page is a forum for contractor, small business people and owners can voice their opposition to the City of PSL compliances.

Our company has returned deposits for $ 10,500.00 of contracted work this week due to compliance with approved PSL site plans. According to Planning and Zoning (Director Daniel Holbrook), if an awning touches the ground, it must be in compliance with an approved site plan before permits can be issued. This includes a non refundable application for site plan amendment $710.00, preparing an amend

ed site plan $ 1,500.00, submittal fees for different departments $ 650.00, and a structural stamp for plans $200.00. Over $ 3,000.00 in fees for an installation of a $1,200.00 awning. This is ludicrous, how can our company survive these ridicules fees? Please help us get the word out before the city destroys more small businesses, this has to be stopped. Please share your experiences with the city on our page and contact the city council, let them know this will no longer be tolerated.

Attended City Council meeting today and it appears all city council members are in favor of changing the city ordinance for site plan ammendments. If passed, contactors will not be required to amend the city's existing site plan for minor site plan amendments. This will be huge for all contractors and put us back to work in PSL. Would bring our permits and fees from over $3,000.00 to under $300.00. Thanks to all who supported us on this, it sure is looking good for now.

Talked to assistant City Manager Gregory Oravec this morning and he has informed me that he is going to try and get the law changed by the end of November. I know it takes time to change a law, so I guess we are going to have to be patient. We should be back to work in PSL if everything goes as planned, only time will tell.

Met with Assistant City Manager Gregory Oravec, he says he is going to work with us. He wants examples of other cities we have done work in that did not require these fees. That should be easy, been doing this for 21 years. Will keep our fingers crossed, there is a ray of hope, and we just want to get to work.

The proposal we received detailing our actual cost to put up a canvas awning for Paradise Car Wash in the City of PSL. There are even more fees on top of this. This job would keep my people working for one week, thanks to the city zoning, they will be home wondering how to pay there bills.

Meeting with City Manager Monday, Sept. 26th. @ 2:00

09/25/2011

Sept. 20th.
Met with the Director of Planning and Zoning "Daniel Hollbrook" to try and resolve our issue with the city. I proposed this question to him " do you think that it is odd for a $1,200.00 canvas awning contract to require over $3,000.00 in permits and fees?" Mr. Hollbrook refused to answer the question, would only look at me with a blank stare, asked him this question 6 times, but he refused to answer it.
