SO STOKED. I believe this is a hornworm caterpillar aka the larvae of a sphinx moth! Super rad group of moths. They are often mistaken for hummingbirds! It’s eating my pink porterweed plant.

At work it’s all about controlling the landscape but at home I have a different approach. Balance. I hope he makes it through his entire transformation but truthfully nature might not allow that.

Birds and lizards are hungry. And parasitic wasps lay eggs inside worms. Everything is trying to eat and reproduce. That’s life.

Flowers for a private event. The design “rule of 3” really played into this one. Sunflowers, eucalyptus and purple aster like blooms. It doesn’t need to be complicated to be beautiful. 🌻

Mushrooms in the garden. 🍄‍🟫

I have become very fascinated with the world of Fungi.

These incredible organisms are more closely related to animals than plants! Yep, that mushroom in the garden is evolutionary more similar to us than the plant growing right next to it.

I’m certainly no mycologist but we chat mushrooms in the garden in my latest Newsletter post.

My favorite Florida FLOWERS to incorporate into Fall Seasonal Displays!

Seriously - if a client wants fall inspired flowers, I’m suggesting one of these.

Color for shade? Say less.

What was once an issue - low light and a consistently moist bed due to irrigation set on one zone for the entire property - turned out to be the perfect conditions for these plants.

There is a plant for almost any situation. Except perhaps total darkness…or space 🪐

This summer tested me. Feeling extra thankful for the plants that stayed strong even during the worst of the heat.

Many folks don’t like Bromeliads.

“Too spiky”

False (insert Dwight meme). MANY bromeliads do not have serrated leaves.

“Ugly”

I’m a firm believer that if you don’t like a plant, it’s not really the plant you dislike but rather how it is used. There are no bad plants, just bad landscapes. I will die on that hill.

“I prefer flowers”

I LOVE flowers. Trust me, I design plenty with them! Give me all the salvias and flowering vines. BUT if you live in S. FL and want low-maintenance, YEAR ROUND color that is also heat and drought tolerant. You’re hard-pressed to find a flower that will prevail over the bromeliad.
