Landscape Fabric - Friend or Foe? 🌱
Landscape fabric is one of the most debated products in landscaping.
Some people swear by it. Others refuse to use it.
The truth is... they're both right.
Like most materials, landscape fabric isn't inherently good or bad. The key is knowing when and where to use it.
We use high-quality woven polypropylene landscape fabric in applications like dry creek beds, gravel pathways, and gravel parking areas. In these situations, it helps suppress w**ds while stabilizing the ground and preventing the soil below from migrating up into the rock. Because it's permeable, water and liquid fertilizer can still pass through to the soil beneath, and quality woven fabric is UV stabilized for long-lasting durability.
However, we generally do not recommend using landscape fabric beneath bark mulch or wood chips.
Why?
As organic mulch naturally decomposes, it creates a new layer of soil on top of the fabric. Before long, w**d seeds blow in, germinate, and begin growing in that new layer of soil. Eventually, you're pulling w**ds anyway, except now they're rooted through the fabric, making them even more frustrating to remove.
Unless we're dealing with an invasive w**d problem, we believe mulch performs best when it's placed directly on healthy soil, allowing water, air, earthworms, and beneficial organisms to work together naturally.
