Before winter really sets in, give your heat pump a quick check.
Start with the outdoor unit. Make sure leaves, branches, grass, snow, and other debris aren’t blocking airflow around the unit. Your heat pump needs adequate airflow to operate properly, especially when it’s working hard during cold weather.
It’s also a good time to check your indoor filters and clean or replace them as recommended for your system. A dirty or clogged filter can restrict airflow and reduce system performance.
If you have a ductless heat pump with a wall-mounted indoor unit, did you know that many of these systems have washable filters? Before washing them, check your manufacturer's instructions or ask your HVAC professional to make sure they're designed to be cleaned that way.
And remember, some frost or ice on an outdoor heat pump coil can be normal during heating operation. The system should periodically enter a defrost cycle to clear it. However, persistent or excessive ice buildup, unusual noises, weak airflow, or difficulty keeping your home comfortable are good reasons to have the system checked.
A few minutes of preparation now can help you avoid an uncomfortable surprise later.
Is your heat pump ready for winter yet?
