Know who to call after a fire. •Contact family members that may not have been with you. Let them know what happened, let them know that everybody is okay (if so) and let them know the information that is necessary.
•After a house fire, don't assume that someone is going to contact your insurance. This is the number one thing that you need to do. This will not only enable documentation of the event and set in train the insurance claim but your insurer will be able to talk you through emergency lodging and living expenses. Remember to retain all receipts to make a claim.[1] The insurance company will also assist with clean up options.[2]
•If you are a tenant, contact the owner/landlord and/or their insurance company.
•Anyone who you feel that could be helpful to you, not necessarily just an insurance company but it could be other things involved, such as the contents of your home and you need to contact a particular help group or business etc. For example, American Red Cross offers services to those who have lost their home.

The fire trucks may be gone but without proper immediate response, the real damage and the costs are just beginning. To return your residential or commercial property to its pre-loss condition requires professional restoration. This is not the job for a do-it-yourself property owner.

For results you can have confidence in, the IICRC recommends hiring a certified restoration firm. Restoration to a property can be complex. Proper smoke and odor removal are tasks that require technicians certified in these specific areas.

When selecting a certified restoration firm several factors must be considered:
•Formal and up-to-date specialized training
•Health and safety certifications
•Experience in a wide range of restoration projects
•Proof of proper insurance and licenses

Fire Threat : Candles
Since they have open flames and are fixtures in many households, candles are also among the most common sources of home fires.
Solution: Think about batteries Instead of using traditional, open-flame candles, consider switching to battery-operated candles that look and perform like real ones. If you do use traditional candles, make sure there is always an adult paying attention in the room when one is burning. (The flame should be extinguished when the adult leaves the room.) "Get out of the habit of lighting a candle in a room and just leaving it burning, you are inviting disaster." Finally, candles should not be lit in your bedroom.

After the fire, seek counseling if needed and reassure children. Having your house damaged or destroyed by fire is extremely traumatic and can have lasting impacts on each family member, depending on his or her ability to cope. Common feelings are helplessness, disorientation, pining for belongings, deep sadness, a sense of deprivation, despair and a loss of routine and structure. The depth of feelings and disorientation will depend on the extent of damage - loss of the entire house can leave everyone feeling as if they have to rebuild life all over again; partial loss, however, still carried stress and sadness. Reassure each other and let the emotions happen. Keep a close eye on children and be truthful with them about what has happened and if you do not know what is going to happen next, at least reassure them that you have one another, that things can all be replaced and that the only way is up from here on.

Attending to water damage in the first 48 hours is essential to preventing progressive, pervasive long-term property destruction. Shop vacs and carpet cleaning equipment are not enough to mediate destruction, expert tools and technology are necessary to ensure drying is complete. Also, Dangerous molds must be properly isolated and addressed to prevent the inadvertent spreading of spores that could result in health issues. In addition, the source of moisture must be identified and eliminated to prevent further proliferation. Call the experts at New Start Construction! 209 242 2317

COLD WEATHER SAFETY TIPS.

Heating Safety

•Use kerosene heaters and space heaters according to the manufacturer's instructions.
•Alternative heaters need their space. Keep anything combustible at least three feet away.
•Make sure your alternative heaters have 'tip switches.' These 'tip switches' are designed to automatically turn off the heater in the event they tip over.
•Do not use the kitchen oven range to heat your home. In addition to being a fire hazard, it can be a source of toxic fumes.
•Never refill a space heater while it is operating or still hot.
•Refuel heaters only outdoors.
•Make sure wood stoves are properly installed, and at least three feet away from combustible materials. Ensure they have the proper floor support and adequate ventilation.

Generator Safety

•Follow the manufacturer's instructions and guidelines when using generators.
•Use a generator or other fuel-powered machines outside the home. CO fumes are odorless and can quickly overwhelm you indoors.
•Use the appropriate sized and type power cords to carry the electric load. Overloaded cords can overheat and cause fires.
•Never run cords under rugs or carpets where heat might build up or damage to a cord may go unnoticed.
•Never connect generators to another power source such as power lines. The reverse flow of electricity or 'backfeed' can electrocute an unsuspecting utility worker.

Electrical Safety

•If your home has sustained flood or water damage, and you can safely get to the main breaker or fuse box, turn off the power.
•Assume all wires on the ground are electrically charged. This includes cable TV feeds.
•Look for and replace frayed or cracked extension and appliance cords, loose prongs, and plugs.
•Exposed outlets and wiring could present a fire and life safety hazard.
•Appliances that emit smoke or sparks should be repaired or replaced.
•Have a licensed electrician check your home for damage.

Additional Tips

•Be careful when using candles. Keep the flame away from combustible objects and out of the reach of children.
•If the power goes out, make certain that all electrical appliances, such as stoves, electric space heaters and hair dryers, are in the OFF position.
•Make certain that your home's smoke alarms are in proper working order.
•Some smoke alarms may be dependent on your home's electrical service and could be inoperative during a power outage. Check to see if your smoke alarm uses a back-up battery and install a new battery at least twice a year.
•Smoke alarms should be installed on every level of your home and inside and outside of sleeping areas.
•All smoke alarms should be tested monthly. All batteries should be replaced with new ones at least twice a year.
•If there is a fire hydrant near your home, keep it clear of snow, ice and debris for easy access by the fire department.

First Aid

Scald burns from hot water and other liquids are the most common burns in childhood. Because burns range from mild to life threatening, some can be treated at home, while others need emergency medical care.

What to Do

If your child is severely burned, call 911 right away. While you wait for help, begin these treatments:
•Remove clothing from the burned areas, except clothing stuck to the skin.
•Run cool (not cold) water over the burn until the pain eases.
•Lightly apply a gauze bandage.
•If your child is awake and alert, offer ibuprofen or acetaminophen for pain.
•Do not put any ointments, butter, or other remedies on the burn — these can make the burn worse.
•Do not break any blisters that have formed.

Seek Emergency Medical Care

If:
•The burned area is large (cover the area with a clean, soft cloth or towel).
•The burns came from a fire, an electrical wire or socket, or chemicals.
•The burn is on the face, hands, feet, joints, or ge****ls.
•The burn looks infected (with swelling, pus, or increasing redness or red streaking of the skin near the wound).

Think Prevention!
•Be careful when using candles, space heaters, and curling irons.
•Keep children away from radiators.
•Be alert around hot drinks.
•Check the temperature of bath water before putting a child in the tub.
•Check smoke alarm batteries at least once a month.
•Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen.
•Do not allow young children to play in the kitchen while someone is cooking.

Primeros auxilios
