Henry County, near Snapping Shoals, 1896… Eight members of the Lummus family—adults, children, and apparently several generations—pause for a formal portrait outside their old two-story farmhouse. Built around 1830, the home belonged first to William Lummus and later to Robert Lummus. By the time this photograph was taken, it had already stood for more than sixty years, witnessing the Civil War, Reconstruction, and enormous changes in rural Georgia life. The house was destroyed by fire in 1920, making this family portrait an especially valuable record of a vanished Henry County home.
