When planning yours, keep these steps in mind.

1. Trench deep enough for a solid gravel footing
2. Install a perforated pipe behind the wall at the base
3. Backfill with crushed stone, not topsoil

Skip the drainage, and that wall will bow or shift within a few seasons.
