This waterfront property presented an interesting challenge. It has a beautiful location overlooking the harbor, but neighboring homes surround the property on nearly every side.

The owners wanted privacy—but conventional screening wasn’t enough. In several locations, we ultimately needed nearly 40 feet of height, with very limited room in which to achieve it.

There was another important consideration: we couldn’t solve one homeowner’s privacy problem by unnecessarily compromising a neighbor’s ocean view.

Fortunately, the neighbors worked together with us on placement, allowing the screening to be positioned close to the property lines where it could provide privacy while preserving the important views.

Our choice was Thuja plicata — Western Red Cedar.

The results speak for themselves. Since installation, these plants have doubled—and in some cases nearly tripled—in size, developing into a tall, dense evergreen screen that gives the property remarkable privacy despite the surrounding homes.

Good landscape design isn’t simply about choosing plants. It’s about understanding the site, the neighbors, the views, and what that landscape needs to accomplish 10, 20, and 30 years from now.

Would you sacrifice a little space today for this level of privacy tomorrow?

This project uses porous asphalt, allowing rain to pass through the surface into a crushed-stone reservoir below.

We installed 12 inches of 2–3-inch crushed stone, followed by 12 inches of ¾-inch stone beneath the paving. At an assumed 33% void space, that reservoir provides more than enough calculated storage for more than 6” of of rain falling directly on the paved area, when initially empty. Actual performance also depends on soil drainage, additional runoff, and maintenance.

But choosing porous asphalt involves more than drainage capacity. Here’s what we learned on this installation:

• PLAN EARLY. We waited two months for the supplier to gather enough demand to produce its minimum 75-ton batch. Confirm availability before setting the construction schedule.

• COMPARE COSTS. On this project, porous asphalt cost approximately 20% more than conventional asphalt. Costs will vary with the site and scope.

• UNDERSTAND THE FINISH. The surface has a coarser, more open texture than a conventional asphalt topcoat. Look at an installed example before choosing it.

• PLAN FOR MAINTENANCE. Keep leaves, soil, and sediment off the surface, and follow the project’s maintenance plan for vacuum cleaning to keep the pores open.

• CHOOSE AN EXPERIENCED PAVING CREW. This installation required careful handling and coordination between the sitework and paving contractors.

For homeowners, these details help you understand what you are investing in. For landscape architects, they are practical considerations to address during design, specification, and construction planning.

What would you want to know before choosing porous asphalt? If you’ve specified or installed it, what has your experience been?

A focal point can change how you experience a garden.

Here, the stepping-stone path leads your eye to a sculptural urn at the far end of the lawn. Its shape and warm color stand out against the planting, giving the space a clear destination.

Specialty pottery adds character without needing a large planting bed. Placed with purpose, one piece can bring an entire garden into focus.

Which view catches your eye first?

Forty years ago, Anderson Landscape Construction built John’s landscape. Today, we return to see how it has grown and to hear what the property has meant to him and his family.

The stone walls remain strong, the plantings have matured, and the brick paving has needed only minor repairs. With care over the years, this landscape has become part of the family’s story.

A transformation of this scale begins below the surface

What started as major excavation and structural sitework became a completely reimagined front landscape—featuring stone walls, extensive grading, a sweeping driveway, new lawns and layered plantings.

This project shows the full capacity of our team: coordinating the difficult work underground while never losing sight of how the completed landscape should feel.

The result is a front yard that complements the architecture, frames the coastal setting and looks as though it has always belonged here.

Designed to capture the warmth and beauty of fall. 🍂

We installed this garden with layers of rich color, texture and seasonal interest—complemented by a natural granite patio that feels perfectly at home in the New England landscape.

As the garden matures, the plantings soften the stonework and create a peaceful outdoor space that becomes more beautiful with every season.

Thoughtful design. Timeless stonework. A landscape made to grow into its surroundings.

A great landscape isn’t meant to look its best only on installation day—it should become more beautiful with every passing season.

These photos show the difference between Year 1 and Year 2. As the plants matured, they softened the stonework, filled the garden beds and brought the entire outdoor space to life.

The lesson? Thoughtful plant selection, proper spacing and regular maintenance matter. When a landscape is designed for maturity—not just immediate appearance—it continues to reward the homeowner year after year.

This is what it means to create a landscape that grows into its full potential.

This outdoor living space brings together and old pool with a new landscape with natural stone, layered perennial gardens, ornamental grasses and mature plantings to create a backyard that feels established, comfortable and connected to its surroundings.

The real beauty of a well-designed landscape isn’t just how it looks when it’s installed — it’s how it develops and comes to life over the years.
